This provision is good

 The childminder makes good observations of children in their play and monitors their progress well. She uses this information well to plan stimulating experiences and activities, which supports their good progress.  The childminder forms warm, secure and close relationships with the children. Children are cooperative, responsive to praise and display good levels of confidence. They are happy to learn and explore. This supports their emotional well-being effectively.  The childminder develops effective partnerships with parents, working together to meet each child's care and learning needs. For example, this supportive, inclusive approach engages parents well in activities to support children's learning at home.  The childminder's evaluations are effective. She monitors her practice well to make sure that she is driving forward improvements to benefit outcomes for children.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not give children enough time to investigate, and to explore activities and resources by themselves.  The childminder misses some opportunities to extend children's understanding of diversity and individual differences in society.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to play and investigate independently, to build on their curiosity and support their exploration  increase opportunities for children to explore and learn further about differences and diversity in the wider world.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the impact of teaching on children's learning in the indoor areas.  The inspector looked at a sample of records and discussed planning, children's assessments and their welfare.  The inspector checked the evidence of the suitability of the childminder and other household members, and the childminder's qualifications.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the views of parents, given in their written feedback to the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of the early years requirements. She has focused on her professional development successfully since returning from maternity leave. For example, by accessing training, she has reviewed and implemented up-to-date policies, and her food menu identifies all the allergens. The childminder has extended her planning, providing stimulating activities to meet children's individual needs and to support their next steps in learning. This positively influences the outcomes for children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures to follow to help her protect children from harm. Her robust risk assessments and good organisation contribute to a safe and secure environment for children to play.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder engages with children well overall and teaches them new words. For example, she described their actions as they made patterns and marks in the play dough with various tools. Children enjoy looking at books and confidently turn the pages. They engage and respond to the childminder's skilful questions and frequent interactions. The childminder develops children's awareness of number, shape and size. For example, she supported younger children's counting skills as they built a small tower with cups. She helps to develop their sensory skills, for instance, through encouraging them to feel the textures of objects, such as brushes in the treasure basket. The childminder encourages children to make links in their learning between the setting and home. For example, children share the teddy bear's adventures to their home, bringing in pictures and a diary.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides children with a warm and welcoming environment where they have fun. The childminder nurtures children's emotional well-being and actively encourages their awareness of their own safety. For example, she discusses consequences and shares what might happen, for instance, if they climb on the toy house. Children enjoy healthy, nutritious snacks and learn new skills, such as peeling a banana and feeding themselves. They have good daily opportunities to engage in physical exercise to promote their health. They learn about the community and develop their early social skills, for example, through visits to places of interest and groups.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Younger children show increasing concentration and confidence. They develop well socially and emotionally. They use good early communication, such as vocal sounds and gestures. Children are eager to explore and investigate. For instance, they crawl, choose toys confidently and enjoy making sounds with the various musical instruments. Children develop the skills they need for their future learning and moving on to school.
