She plans a good range of activities that children thoroughly enjoy, with a very good balance of child-initiated play.  The childminder is well qualified and experienced. She successfully uses her knowledge and skills to provide good quality play and learning experiences for children, helping them develop the skills they need for their future learning.  Parents speak very highly of the childminder and appreciate the service provided for their children. They comment that she provides amazing support to children and their families, and that she has a natural affinity with the children. They feel safe and secure in her care.  Children are very happy and content in the childminder's home. They are emotionally

secure because the childminder has built very good relationships with the children and their families. Parents are kept well informed about their children's daily care routines and how well they are developing.  The childminder has a comprehensive range of policies and procedures to promote children's health, well-being and safety. She very successfully monitors her provision. This helps her make effective improvements to ensure the quality of care, teaching and learning is maintained to a good level.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always encourage parents to share information about their child's learning and development at home.  The childminder does not use every opportunity to promote older children's early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 provide more opportunities for all parents to share what they know about their children's learning at home so that this information can be used to enhance the planning of activities and experiences for children's learning  extend and challenge the older and most-able children to promote their early literacy and writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed areas of the childminder's home that are used for the care of children.  The inspector observed teaching and learning activities and assessed the impact they have on the children.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all adults living on the premises and evidence of the childminder's training.  The inspector looked at a sample of policies, procedures and children's development records and talked to the childminder about her self-evaluation and plans for improvement.  The inspector took account of the views of parents detailed from written references available on the day of inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of the possible signs of abuse and neglect and knows who to contact in the event of a concern. She attends regular training to update her knowledge and skills. She monitors the work of her assistants to ensure their practice reflects her good standards. The childminder regularly monitors and evaluates the quality of teaching and learning. Planning, observation and assessment work well. Parents are regularly informed about their children's achievements and their next steps in learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are enthusiastic and excited learners. Their learning is enhanced through the childminder's meaningful conversations and well-considered questions as they play. She asks them to recall events before they begin to make their own sandwiches for the Queen's birthday tea party. They talk about the pictures they have posted to the palace and are proud of the ones on display. The childminder gives them good support to find their own way of doing things and successfully builds on their learning while having fun. She helps them learn about numbers, shape and size. For example, children talk about making six sandwiches and cutting their big sandwich in half, and the childminder introduces triangle and circle shapes into the conversation. The childminder follows the children's lead as they decide to search for snowflakes and bobbles in the craft box to create a picture. Children like to listen to stories and use their imagination while dressing

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's emotional well-being, health and physical development are promoted successfully. They show high levels of confidence and self-esteem as the childminder praises them and talks to them about being brilliant. Children have good opportunities each day to spend time outdoors; they walk to and from school and visit local parks. The childminder helps them understand about keeping themselves safe as they play. She explains how to use equipment, such as how to handle knives safely while making sandwiches and how to sit carefully on their chair. The childminder is caring and attentive and she knows the children well. Children develop positive relationships with each other and they use good manners, share and take turns. They learn about the wider world and enjoy taking part in a variety of festivals and celebrations. The childminder recognises the importance of working with other agencies and has developed good links with the local
