Inspection activities
The inspector observed the childminder and children interacting and playing together. The inspector looked at the parts of the house which are available for childminding. The inspector looked at a sample of paperwork, including the childminder's qualification certificates and evidence of suitability. The inspector spoke to the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The childminder is highly organised and is committed to providing a safe environment for children and families. For example, she has carried out a thorough risk assessment in her new setting to help keep children safe in her care. She has also updated her procedures to include a risk assessment for outings, which was a recommendation from her previous inspection. The childminder keeps up to date with early years practice. For example, she carries out her own reading and research to improve her knowledge. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her responsibility to protect children. She knows the procedure to follow if she has concerns about the welfare of children and families.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. She provides toys and activities to engage and interest them. For instance, children laugh excitedly as she bounces them on her knee, and she encourages them to point to pictures as they share books together. The childminder extends children's physical development successfully. For example, she shows children how to stack rings and use posting toys, as well as holding their hands to encourage walking. The childminder uses the local environment successfully to extend learning, such as pointing out the trains to children as they go past the house. She monitors children's progress effectively and provides purposeful activities to help them progress in their learning.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder is very patient and nurturing and places a high priority on children's emotional well-being. For example, she works closely with parents to mirror their children's home routines, such as sleeping and mealtimes, and remains at children's level during play. The childminder promotes children's individual needs well. For instance, she finds out about their family backgrounds and cultures and introduces key words from their own languages. The childminder promotes good hygiene effectively. For example, she uses visual reminders for older children to encourage effective hand washing and provides them with individual towels. In addition, she follows good hygiene procedures when she prepares meals and changes nappies.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are very happy and show good levels of confidence. For example, they laugh and smile with the childminder and access toys independently. They are secure in the childminder's presence and seek comfort with her when they become tired, showing familiarity with the daily routines. Children make good progress from their starting points and are well prepared for the next stage in their education.
