This provision is good

 Children's learning and development are supported well. The childminder provides a comfortable, warm environment where children take part in a good balance of focused and freely chosen activities. All children make good progress.  Children build secure emotional relationships with the childminder. Older children readily seek her out for support and she is highly responsive and sensitive to the needs of the younger children. This helps all children to feel safe and secure.  The childminder develops very good partnerships with parents and other settings, and shares information well. This helps to promote children's learning and achievement in all settings and at home.  The childminder monitors children's learning well. She identifies areas where children need additional support and plans effectively for their ongoing development.  The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date and ensures that she attends all

required training. She holds an early years qualification and uses research to continue to improve her practice.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, older children have too few opportunities to develop their mathematical skills, for example, their understanding of size and shape.  Children's understanding of the diversity of people and communities in the wider world is not effectively promoted.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 strengthen opportunities for older children to develop their early mathematical skills  extend opportunities for children to develop their understanding of people in the wider community.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at the areas of the home used by children.  The inspector observed the childminder playing with the children during a range of activities.  The inspector discussed activities with the childminder.  The inspector reviewed the childminder's policies, looked at children's records and checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and suitability.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in written responses.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of the signs and symptoms that may cause her concern. She understands the procedure to follow to protect children in her care from harm. The childminder provides a warm, homely environment where children of all ages thrive. She carries out regular safety checks of her home to make sure it is suitable and safe for children. Parents comment positively about the good progress their children make. The childminder reflects on her practice and identifies ways to secure ongoing improvements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder makes regular assessments of children's learning and development so she is familiar with their interests and needs. The childminder works closely with other settings children attend and uses the information she gathers to plan well for their next steps in learning. Children benefit from a wide range of resources and experiences to support them in all areas of learning. For example, children played a card game where they delighted in identifying and matching up opposites. Children used very good language to describe the different pictures. The childminder asked lots questions to help the children think about how the pictures match. She used lots of praise to build children's confidence in their own abilities.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children play in a warm and welcoming environment. The childminder attends to younger children's care needs very well. She gently encourages them to explore, while staying close enough to be supportive. For example, children sat with the childminder and she ensured they could safely reach their favourite toys and resources so that they enjoyed their play. She has a very good awareness of children's individual needs and routines. Younger children sleep when they need to and the childminder ensures they are settled and comfortable. Children demonstrate their independence well. They dress and feed themselves with confidence. Children learn about healthy lifestyles through, for example, good hygiene routines and regular opportunities for outdoor play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress; they settle very quickly and enjoy learning. They are confident as they choose activities and resources and play together. Older children listen attentively and follow instructions well. They are enthusiastic to join in with activities and show good levels of concentration. Children are gaining the key skills to help them to prepare for the next stage of their learning, such as school.
