This provision is good
The childminder is experienced and has a good understanding of how children learn through play. She provides a range of activities and resources that motivates children to play and learn. Children are settled and content with the childminder. She has a calm, sensitive and caring approach to their care. This promotes children's emotional well-being and helps them feel happy and secure. The childminder has established strong partnerships with parents and she shares information with them effectively. This results in good continuity of care and learning between the setting and the home. Parents are highly complementary about the care their children receive. The childminder prepares children well for the move to school, both emotionally and educationally. She works closely with parents and schools to ensure that children are prepared for the new learning environment.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder takes good advantage of training opportunities and meetings with other childcare professionals to help improve her practice. However, her professional development is not fully focused on raising the quality of teaching even higher to help children make the best possible progress.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:
p.2
What the setting needs to do to improve further
focus professional development more precisely on raising the quality of teaching to an outstanding level.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed children's play in the childminder's home and garden. The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector looked at children's records and a selection of policies and procedures. The inspector observed adult and child interactions. The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder's knowledge of child protection issues, together with thorough policies, ensures that she has a clear understanding of safeguarding. She knows the actions to take if she has concerns about children's safety or welfare. The childminder uses an informal network of other professionals to ensure that her practice is in line with current guidance. The childminder is committed to providing good quality care. She consistently reflects on and evaluates the quality of her provision, setting goals and targets to drive improvements.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses observations and assessments well to set appropriate challenges for children's future learning. Her checks on children's progress enable her to identify where support is needed to minimise any gaps in learning. Babies learn early communication skills through the childminder's interactions. She speaks simply and clearly, modelling simple words and sounds. Babies babble back to the childminder who responds positively. Babies show they are content through their smiles and giggles as they try to copy sounds. The childminder follows children's interests when she plans for their learning. For example, when children show an interest in animals, she introduces books and puppets based on farm animals. Early literacy skills are emerging as young children turn pages and point to pictures as the childminder reads to them.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are well cared for by the warm and attentive childminder. Babies are well nurtured and have clearly formed positive attachments to the childminder. They look to her for comfort and reassurance which are given through cuddles and soothing, gentle words. The childminder gives children opportunities to explore the local community, for example, by visiting local groups and parks. This helps children to make new friends and develop their personal, social and emotional skills. Children learn to lead healthy lifestyles in the childminder's care. They have opportunities to get plenty of fresh air and exercise as they play in the childminder's garden. Younger children enjoy watching and trying to catch bubbles as the childminder blows them in the air. The childminder provides a nutritious range of meals and snacks and helps children to understand about making healthy choices.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in all areas of learning and are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age. The childminder helps to prepare children emotionally when the time is ready for them to move on to school. She talks to children about what to expect and they visit their new schools. Children are confident, active learners who are motivated to explore and try things for themselves. The childminder effectively supports children to develop many of the skills they need for the next stage of their education.
