Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector looked at children's assessment records and the planning documentation. The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the suitability of all household members, and the childminder's qualifications. She also looked at the childminder's self-evaluation form and discussed her improvement plan. The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents and carers spoken to on the day and from information included in the childminder's own parent survey.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a thorough understanding of how to keep children safe. She is confident and very clear of the procedure to follow for reporting concerns about the welfare of a child. The childminder has all of the legally required documentation and records in place, as well as a range of comprehensive policies. The childminder continually reflects on her practice and uses the feedback from parents to help her shape her provision. She accurately identifies areas for future development. The childminder has good links with other settings that children attend. This helps to promote continuity for each child in their learning and development. Parents are complimentary about the service they receive.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The well qualified and knowledgeable childminder has a good understanding of child development and how children learn. She has completed progress checks for children aged between two and three years. These contain all the required information and are shared with parents. This information helps her to identify any gaps in children's learning and seek additional support if required. The childminder effectively promotes children's communication and language skills. For example, she provides a commentary to children's actions to help them hear the correct pronunciation of words. Children confidently choose where they want to play and the childminder responds to their needs and interests.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder gathers comprehensive information on each child's individual needs when they first start. This helps children to settle quickly into the childminder's welcoming home. Children enjoy close, supportive relationships with the childminder who constantly praises them and builds their self-esteem. Children are well behaved. The childminder is a good role model and uses clear and consistent methods to manage children's behaviour. Children are encouraged to be independent and are supported well to meet their own personal care needs. They enjoy the responsibility of taking care of their coats and switching on the lights to wash their hands. The childminder understands the importance of providing children with a healthy diet and ensuring they get fresh air and exercise. Children really enjoy being outside recreating roadworks with toy diggers and trucks.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children delight in choosing toys from a bag to identify rhymes. They are eager to join in, singing some of the words and copying the actions. Children are happy, curious and keen to play and learn. They are making good progress from their starting points. Children are emotionally and physically well prepared for their next stage in their learning, including nursery and their journey on to school.
