p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not ensured that she continually maintains an up-to-date record of children's attendance to safeguard children's welfare effectively. This is also a breach of the Childcare Register.  The childminder does not focus enough on evaluating her practice. She has not pursued relevant opportunities for her professional development to ensure she meets statutory requirements and to help her provide very high levels of practice.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder knows the children well. She provides a good range of resources that reflect children's preferences and needs. This helps children to relax and enjoy their time when they are not at school.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to keep the environment safe for children. For example, she minimises all risks in the home and on their journey from school.  The childminder has established links with schools that children attend. She makes effective use of information sharing to complement children's care and learning.  Children are happy and well settled in the childminder's care. They develop positive attitudes and behave well. They share with each other and show good manners.  The childminder promotes effective partnerships with parents and keeps them well informed about their children's day.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date

 maintain a daily record of the children being cared for and their hours of attendance. 09/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 make effective use of self-evaluation to identify and support ongoing professional development needs.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and her interactions with the children.  The inspector checked the documentation the childminder uses to support her practices.  The inspector discussed her self-evaluation systems and continuous development with the childminder.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection regarding her practice.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her child protection training up to date. She is clear about what to do and the procedures to follow should there be a concern about any child in her care. However, the childminder has not maintained a register of children's attendance for some time and is unable to verify accurately when children have been attending her setting. The childminder has a valid paediatric first aid qualification so she is able to confidently deal with any minor accidents to children. She has a good understanding of how to minimise safety risks. For example, she makes sure that she does a visual check of the home and garden before children arrive back from school. The childminder's self-evaluation process does not readily identify areas of practice that do not meet requirements. Her professional development is not fully effective in helping to raise her practice to a good or better level.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a stimulating environment with a range of play equipment and resources. Children select independently and extend their play and learning. The childminder has a good awareness of children's abilities. She encourages their learning in an enjoyable and relaxed way, after their day at school. The childminder interacts well with children as they play. For example, she encourages children to 'have a go' when they choose a complex puzzle. She reminds them to look carefully at the picture and suggests a way to start using the straight-edge pieces first. Children have plenty of opportunities to write and draw, count and solve problems while playing and engaging in activities.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder acts as a positive example of how to treat others. She is calm and caring in her approach and provides clear boundaries for children to follow. Children behave well and learn to share, take turns, respect and care for each other. They develop a good awareness of friendships as they happily play together. For example, they understand about using a timer so that everyone gets a turn on the trampoline. Children get plenty of physical exercise. For example, they enjoy going outside in the garden on their arrival from school and have a run around to release their energy. The childminder promotes healthy lifestyles well. For example, she is vigilant about providing a cooked meal that meets children's dietary requirements and promotes their good health. Children develop good levels of independence. For example, they are confident with their self-help skills and attending to their own personal care needs.
