Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Not applicable

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The management team has not yet fully embedded sharply focused induction training, ongoing supervisions and evaluations of the staff's practice. This means their quality of teaching does not support all children to make even further progress.  Partnerships with parents and the schools have not been fully developed. This does not ensure staff gain a full picture of children's achievements and interests.  The club's management team has not evaluated the provision to accurately identify priorities for improvement. It does not include the views of parents, children and staff to help reflect on all areas of practice.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children make choices and follow their own interests. There is a warm, welcoming, thoughtfully planned playroom. Children are happy and motivated to engage in play freely and interact with a wide range of activities and resources. They enjoy their time at the club and have fun.  Children behave well. Older children are helpful towards the younger ones. Staff provide clear guidance for children about what is acceptable behaviour. They help children develop an appropriate understanding of consistent boundaries.  The provider is keen to develop her service. She accesses local authority support and some training opportunities. The main members of staff complete the required training.  Children develop strong attachments with the staff and create clear friendship groups at the club. This promotes their well-being, enhances their social skills and supports their independence.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

Due Date

 ensure induction training, supervisions and evaluations for all staff are ongoing and move their practice forward. 09/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 build on strategies to help parents provide more detailed information about what children do at home and improve links with the schools so that staff gain a better picture of children's achievements and interests  develop an effective self-evaluation process that includes the views of parents, children and staff and that accurately identifies and addresses priorities for improvement.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the children engaged in a range of play experiences. She spoke to children and staff throughout the inspection.  The inspector accompanied staff collecting children from their classroom at a local school.  The inspector had a tour of the areas used. She held meetings with the manager at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability and training certificates of staff working at the club. She also looked at a selection of policy documents, including the safeguarding policy and procedures and risk assessments.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. There are detailed policies and procedures in place to promote children's safety. These are regularly reviewed, understood by all staff and shared with parents so that they also understand the practices. The safeguarding policy details the procedures to follow should staff need to share concerns about children in their care. Staff are clear about their safeguarding practice and their responsibility to protect children to help keep them safe. Staff know the signs and symptoms of possible abuse and how to record and report any concerns regarding children's welfare. Permission for outings is sought from parents. Ratios are met and staff understand about supervising children at all times. Risk assessments identify how hazards are minimised to ensure children's safety is maintained at all times. This includes staff walking children to and from local schools and visiting local amenities. Recruitment and

vetting procedures ensure that staff are suitable to work with children prior to them starting at the club. However, induction training, evaluation of staff practice and regular supervisions are not consistent to ensure staff are monitored and receive ongoing support. The club's leaders do not evaluate the provision to identify improvements. Parents are happy with the care their children receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Children engage in a wide range of activities and freely select games and resources. They are motivated and communicate their ideas well. Children request specific resources, are active and adapt games to fit their purpose. They join in imaginative role play, negotiating roles and discussing the cost of items with friends. This shows children are beginning to use everyday language related to money, displaying their mathematical understanding. Children play with small-world models and interactive toys. The staff encourage and support their interests further. They demonstrate how to link and operate equipment. This helps children to gain an understanding of the world in which they live. Staff have some understanding of the seven areas of learning. However, staff do not gather enough detailed information from parents and the schools about children's achievements and interests. This means staff do not always consider the different abilities of the children to

fully support the next stage of their education.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children visit with their parents to become familiar with the club and the staff. This promotes positive relationships and helps children to settle. Children are relaxed and engage in conversations as they happily walk back to the club's premises. They are happy to see the club's staff on pick up from the school. Children demonstrate appropriate safe practices as they walk and play, and learn about club rules and boundaries. Staff provide consistent reminders for them to respect expectations and to remain safe. Healthy lifestyles are promoted and children are active and have regular daily access to fresh air. They manage their own basic hygiene and are given a choice of healthy food. Staff praise children and give encouragement. Younger children enjoy the time they spend with the staff and the older children. This results in confident children, who are motivated to take part in the activities available.
