It is not yet outstanding because:

 Arrangements to promote children's interest in reading are not always fully successful.  The childminder does not always recognise opportunities to encourage children to complete manageable tasks to enhance their independence.

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas of the home used for childminding purposes.  The inspector observed the childminder interacting with the children.  The inspector sampled the childminder's policies and procedures, including evidence relating to safeguarding and her first aid qualification.  The inspector considered the views of parents by sampling written feedback made available during the inspection.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder throughout the inspection to assess her understanding of the requirements.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of how to protect children from harm, including the correct procedures to follow if she has any welfare concerns. The childminder effectively checks her home for hazards and reduces any risks, in order to ensure children play in a safe and secure environment. The childminder evaluates her practice to identify areas for improvement. For example, she has strengthened the arrangements to involve parents in their children's learning. The childminder regularly seeks opportunities to improve her professional knowledge and skills. For example, she reads and attends training to enhance children's learning experiences. Parents comment that they are happy with the service that the childminder provides for their children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children engage in a range of activities. They enjoy their play and show good concentration skills. For example, while exploring play dough, children focus well as they make different objects. The childminder provides opportunities that develop children's coordination in order to prepare them for early writing. During play, the childminder effectively introduces new vocabulary, extending children's communication and language skills. She uses her knowledge of what children know and can do to monitor their progress regularly and prepare them for their next steps in learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a positive role model. Children respond very well to her calm and sensitive approach. The childminder effectively helps children to become confident. For example, she acknowledges their efforts as well as their achievements, helping to build their self-esteem. Children form strong, affectionate attachments with the childminder and their behaviour is good. Children develop healthy habits, for example, they wash their hands before eating. They have regular opportunities to be physically active. For example, children enjoy visiting local parks and groups where they develop good social skills and benefit from active play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their development in relation to their starting points. They are confident and concentrate well during activities. Children develop a secure understanding of the need to value differences in the world. Children have good physical coordination and benefit from the strong support to help them become emotionally ready for their move to nursery school or school.
