This provision is good
Children clearly enjoy their time with the childminder, who is warm and friendly. They are confident and independent learners with a strong sense of belonging. The childminder is skilled in describing what is happening and modelling language as children play. This helps children to develop their understanding, speaking and listening skills, and communicate their thoughts and ideas well with others. Children make good progress in their communication and language, which helps to prepare them well for future learning. The childminder provides a good range of toys and resources to support children's learning and choices. They freely help themselves to resources, following and developing their own ideas as they explore and play imaginatively. The childminder works very well with parents and with other settings children attend. She continually exchanges information with them to promote continuity in children's
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder knows the children well and monitors their progress closely to identify any gaps in learning. She considers their next steps in learning but does not always use this information effectively to help her focus more sharply on what she can do to extend their progress even further.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

focus more sharply on what children need to learn next, to plan more targeted activities and support to extend their progress even further.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector evaluated an activity with the childminder. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as children's records and the childminder's policies and procedures. The inspector spoke to and interacted with children during the inspection. She took into account the written views of parents. The inspector looked at the childminder's self-evaluation and the suitability checks for the childminder and her husband.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of how to help keep children safe from harm and the processes to follow. The childminder provides an environment that is safe and secure. She undertakes regular risk assessments effectively for all areas of her home to ensure children can play safely. The childminder effectively monitors children's progress and tracks their development well. She completes written summaries for parents about their children's learning between the age of two and three years. The childminder evaluates her effectiveness well. She completes research on the internet and links with other childminders to help her make changes to her practice and improve children's experiences, for example, in providing more healthy meals and improving children's access to books to develop their language and literacy skills.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides stimulating activities that promote all aspects of learning. She offers children good challenge in a playful and enjoyable way. Children are motivated and engaged in active learning. For example, younger children enjoy pretend play where they act out familiar situations and routines with dolls. The childminder asks children questions that encourage them to think for themselves and find their own solutions. For instance, she asks, 'What will happen if I mix water with soil?' The childminder supports children's exploration outdoors well. All children investigate and experiment using their senses, such as smelling and touching flowers.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder provides a welcoming, warm and friendly environment that helps children to settle and engage well in their learning. Children behave well and are helpful; for example, they understand expectations to tidy up. The childminder praises and encourages children, which helps them understand rules and develop strong self-esteem. Children have a good understanding of how to keep safe. The childminder skilfully talks to them about risks and dangers in everyday routines and activities, such as why they hold her hand when coming down the stairs. Children enjoy a range of healthy snacks and physical exercise. This contributes well to them leading healthy lifestyles.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress from their starting points. They develop strong relationships with the childminder and firm friendships as they play with, and alongside, others. All children develop good confidence and learn to do things for themselves during the daily routines. Children develop good literacy skills. They learn to recognise written names and sound-out letters. Children are confident communicators and enjoy familiar rhymes and songs. They gain good skills that prepare them well for their future learning.
