This provision is good

 The childminder organises her provision very well. She is proactive in implementing different and improved ways of working. She regularly undertakes mandatory and additional training to enhance her knowledge and to improve her provision and the experiences she offers the children.  The childminder delivers a range of stimulating activities that promotes children's learning effectively. Her consistent assessments of children's achievements and further planning for their individual needs ensure that they make good developmental progress.  Children play and learn in a safe, welcoming environment and in the care of a child- focused practitioner who knows them, their families and their specific needs well. Children are happy and relaxed, developing a strong sense of belonging and growing in confidence.  The childminder ensures that she works effectively with parents to meet children's individual needs. Parents share what they know about their children and the

childminder keeps them informed about their children's achievements and progress.  Children learn to communicate and gain useful social skills as the childminder interacts with them in a warm, responsive way. She takes them out and about where they meet new children and adults and experience different activities and environments.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Arrangements are not yet fully in place to liaise with parents on ways to promote their child's next steps in learning at home.  Self-evaluation currently identifies broad areas for improvement but does not focus sharply on how planned actions will make a difference to children's outcomes.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strive towards establishing highly successful partnerships with parents, looking at ways to extend the information they receive about their child's next steps and how they can continue promoting these at home  extend the use of self-evaluation systems so that improvement planning is tightly focused on further strengthening the quality of practice and enhancing children's experiences and progress.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas used for childminding. She talked to the children and childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection and observed a variety of activities.  The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder as well as a selection of policies and procedures, including safeguarding. She discussed risk assessments and the childminder's self-evaluation process.  The inspector carried out a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. She discussed children's learning and development, sampled their records and looked at the planning documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day and by reading a number of their comments on questionnaires and letters given to the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibilities. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of the signs of child abuse and neglect, and she knows how to protect children from harm. She has informative written safeguarding procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child's safety. The childminder keeps up to date with good practice through her own research and meets regularly with other childminders for professional discussions. She gains the views of parents regularly to ensure she is offering them a satisfying service and makes changes to improve her provision accordingly.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children have very good opportunities to explore, investigate and play imaginatively with a wide range of sensory and exploratory materials. The childminder asks appropriate and probing questions to fuel their imagination and exploration and ignite their thinking further. Children enjoy creating mud pies in the garden and tell the childminder that they are 'chocolate dinner'. Older children count out pies and offer them to their friends. The childminder encourages children to calculate how many more they will need to ensure that they all have one. Children explore early concepts of capacity as they investigate emptying and filling containers with play dough. They experiment with making marks in play dough using various tools. The childminder helps them to persevere in using cutters and other tools, age appropriately, to create their favourite animals, make designs and to cut and mould the dough. They remain engaged and interested for continued periods of time,

extending their ideas and skills and developing positive attitudes towards learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children thrive on the individual attention they receive from the childminder. She provides them with additional help and explanation when they are struggling to understand expectations and she uses positive praise to acknowledge their achievements. Children are enthusiastic and confident to explore the well resourced and stimulating areas set out within the childminder's home. They relish developing their physical skills on the wide range of equipment in the childminder's garden. Younger children toddle around after balls, throwing and rolling them and excitedly shout, 'Goal' as they proficiently kick the ball. Older children are challenged as they manipulate smaller balls through tunnels with bats and clubs, and proudly grin as they master walking on mini-stilts. Children learn to respect and care for the childminder's pet ducks and rabbits. They enjoy learning about nature and watch in fascination as the childminder finds a frog in her garden. They

observe and discuss its unique features and confidently share their own knowledge.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress in their learning and development. They have built strong positive relationships with the childminder and beneficial friendships with their peers. They are able to communicate their needs and are becoming confident individuals. They are self-motivated and show they can attend to tasks and concentrate on things that interest them. All children, including those who speak English as an additional language, are acquiring the skills they need for their future learning and their move on to school.
