This provision is good

 Staff plan a good range of activities for children to enjoy, indoors and outdoors. They listen to children's ideas and plan activities following children's interests. This contributes well to children's enthusiasm and engagement levels.  Children's behaviour is good. Children of all ages play cooperatively together. They share resources and happily take turns in team games and activities.  Children develop very good relationships with staff and each other. Younger children are supported well by staff and some older children.  Risk assessments are thorough to help staff promote children's safety. For example, staff follow established routines for the school run and are attentive in their supervision of children both indoors and outdoors.  The provider implements robust recruitment and vetting procedures which help to ensure that all staff are suitable to care for children.  The self-evaluation process is effective and takes account of the views of staff, children

and parents. Staff continue to improve the quality of care that they provide to children, such as by improving the outdoor environment.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasions, staff do not provide the opportunity for children to manage tasks that they are able to do for themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 encourage children to manage tasks that they can do for themselves, to develop their self-care skills further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the care of children in the playroom and outdoor area.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector spoke with staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. Staff have a good understanding of child protection issues and know the procedure to follow if they have concerns about a child in their care. There are regular opportunities for children to practise and learn how to keep themselves safe in an emergency. Regular observation and supervision of staff practice enable the manager to evaluate the quality of staff performance. Staff are encouraged to continue with their professional development and, for example, attend training when available. Since the last inspection, staff have established effective arrangements to improve the sharing of relevant information with teachers, to help ensure continuity of care. Parents' comments compliment the activities provided for their children and the dedication of the staff.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff provide good support and help all children to feel welcomed and valued at the club. The play environments are set up before the staff collect children from school. Children have activities and resources to start playing with as soon as they arrive. Staff take children's interests into account when choosing which toys are made available each session. This helps to increase the time that children are engaged in their chosen play activity. Staff spend all their time with the children and strike up meaningful conversations with them, for example, as they eat their tea. Discussions about likes and dislikes help staff to gain additional knowledge about the children. Staff observe children and share anything significant with parents and teachers, to offer continuity in children's care. Children concentrate as they make paper aeroplanes to fly outside. Staff offer guidance and praise, which children find motivating. Children clearly enjoy playing outdoors and are

effectively taught to be careful of their own and others' safety, such as when they run around chasing a ball.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

It is clear that children thoroughly enjoy their time spent at the club. The atmosphere is relaxed and very friendly. Children form warm and trusting relationships with the staff. Children's behaviour is good and they are taught to be polite. For example, older children make a point of introducing themselves to visitors and hold the doors open for adults. Staff are good role models. Children help to decide the club rules and understand what is expected of them, such as tidying up the playground before they go indoors. Staff support children effectively to learn about, and recognise and value, the feelings of others.
