This provision is good

 The manager and staff closely observe children's learning and regularly assess and monitor their progress. They identify any gaps in children's learning and address these through carefully planned activities and support. All children make good progress from their starting points.  Children benefit from a well-organised environment. Staff make good use of the space available indoors and outside. Children easily choose from a wide variety of exciting resources and activities that engage and inspire them.  Children behave well, and are happy and settled. Staff are sensitive to their individual needs and promote their emotional and physical well-being effectively.  Children have many opportunities to develop an understanding of the world around them and the differences between themselves and others. They learn to consider each other's feelings, ideas and opinions.  The manager is committed to continual improvement and maintains an ongoing

development plan. This includes the views of staff, children and parents.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not always organise group-time activities effectively to support and engage all children according to their needs.  Staff do not routinely gather information from parents about what children are achieving at home to help further inform their assessments of children's progress.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop the organisation of group activities further, to ensure that all children are appropriately challenged and fully engaged  build on the already good partnerships with parents, by putting in place more effective ways to help parents routinely share their observations of what they know their children can do at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at the children's records, planning documentation, evidence of the suitability of staff working in the provision, and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.  The inspector took into account the written views, comments and suggestions of parents.  The inspector spoke with members of staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection and held discussions with the manager of the provision.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector observed children taking part in a range of activities both indoors and outdoors, and assessed the quality of care and teaching and the impact this has on children's learning, development and welfare.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The manager and staff have a good understanding of their responsibility to keep children safe. They are confident in the procedures to follow should they have concerns about a child's welfare. Staff have positive opportunities to discuss their practice and professional development with the manager. They regularly attend training courses and share their learning with the staff team to improve children's learning experiences. Effective procedures help staff to assess children's knowledge and skills before they start, to plan positive learning experiences from the very beginning and review the progress they make. Parents comment highly of the pre-school and value the caring, approachable staff team.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff guide and support children well, encouraging them to solve problems for themselves and test out their ideas. They respond to children's interests well. Children develop effective early writing skills. For example, they used their hands and fingers to make marks in shaving foam and showed an interest in writing their names and the written words displayed around the environment. Staff give children time to thoroughly explore their ideas. For example, they became absorbed in making playdough cupcakes using various exciting materials, a cake stand and baking trays. Children have constant access to the outdoor area throughout the day. They explore and investigate. For example, they fill containers with sand and water, dig in the earth and plant flowers.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff are good role models and provide children with consistent support and guidance. Staff value the contributions that children make and actively listen to their views and opinions. This contributes towards children's confidence and self-esteem. Staff support children to understand the feelings and opinions of each other and they play cooperatively together. The environment is planned so that children can access resources freely and make choices in what they want to play with. Children develop their large physical skills, such as using a range of equipment outdoors, which helps to promote good health. For example, children develop good balance and coordination as they safely negotiate their balancing skills on tree stumps.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. They are independent and confidently make choices about their day. Children develop their early literacy skills. For example, staff use interactive stories, songs and rhyme times to capture children's attention and encourage their speaking and listening skills. Children learn to get along together, share and take turns. They are well prepared for their next stage of learning and for school.
