children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged Good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection Ofsted judge that it has sustained effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people in this home continue to make progress. The previous resident moved from the home to a supported lodgings placement, in accordance with their care plan. The manager and staff supported the young person to enjoy a positive, well planned move, where they continue to build upon the skills already acquired. The registered manager has remained in touch with the young person. The admission process for the young person now living in the home ensured a careful transition from the previous placement. Prior to the move, individual staff visited the young person, and the young person also made visits to their prospective home and chose bedroom colours. From the outset, staff have focused on building trust and good relationships with the young person, so they are helped to settle into the home and feel safe. The young person has been out of school for some months prior to coming to the home. Meetings are arranged and introductory

visits to a new school have now started. These visits are being increased at the young person’s pace, with a view to full time attendance as soon as possible. The registered manager and staff have excellent working relationships with school, social worker and other professionals. The social worker commented that ‘the manager and staff focus on the young person achieving outcomes in education and building relationships – they care for him in a therapeutic and positive way.’ Staff are in close communication and facilitate contact with previous carers and family members. This regular and consistent communication with others involved in the young person’s life ensures that the young person feels supported. As such, well- coordinated plans are in place for the young person, giving them every opportunity to reach their potential. The young person enjoys a variety of activities, such as ice skating, skateboarding

and reading. The young person’s room is personalised and the house is warm and welcoming with toys and personal belongings situated throughout. The young person keeps pet budgies in the bedroom and enjoys looking after them well. Staff care for the young person on a one to one basis, with additional on-call support available, should this be needed. Staff skilfully care for the young person and have not used physical intervention. The young person has not absconded from the placement. A dedicated telephone is available for the young person in the home, but it is kept in the office. Therefore it is not possible to make a private telephone call without reference to staff. The young person’s placement and health plan have not been updated to clearly reflect current arrangements and so is not a useful document either for reference or for measuring progress. This was a requirement at the previous inspection that

is not met. The young person does not have a placement plan that is written in a format that is accessible to them. However, a local authority care plan is available and both the care plan and placement plan are clear about long term objectives for the young person’s future.

What the inspection judgements mean

At the interim inspection we make a judgement on whether the home has improved in effectiveness, sustained effectiveness, or declined in effectiveness since the previous full inspection. This is in line with the Inspection of children's homes: framework for inspection.

p.6

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
