This provision is good

 The childminder has developed good systems to ensure continuity of care and learning between her setting and any others the children may attend.  Children enjoy a range of enjoyable activities using a wide variety of resources that support their development and enable them to make good progress in all areas of learning.  The childminder has good relationships with parents. She works closely with them to exchange valuable information about children's care, learning and development.  The childminder is well-qualified. She evaluates her practice well and identifies and attends training which is beneficial to all children in her care.  Children are happy in the welcoming environment. They are provided with many opportunities to initiate their own learning and develop their confidence and self- esteem.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses opportunities to encourage children to solve problems and develop their thinking skills further.  The childminder regularly reminds children about keeping safe and following good hygiene routines. However, she does not always help children to understand why.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 encourage children's thinking and problem-solving skills further  strengthen children's understanding about ways to keep healthy and safe.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's learning records, planning documentation, and a selection of policies and children's records.  The inspector took account of the views of parents via letters and references seen on the day.  The inspector observed the childminder interacting with the children.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a secure knowledge of her duty to safeguard children. She has a safeguarding policy in line with local guidance and is clear about her duty to deal promptly with any concerns about a child's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder implements good-quality systems to plan and review children's learning and development needs. She works closely with her co-childminder to make sure children's needs are met well. For example, together they closely observe and monitor children's progress. The childminder updates her skills and knowledge, for example, meeting regularly with other childcare professionals and local authority advisors to share good practice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans the day according to the children's interests and the next steps in their learning. Children's communication skills are promoted well. For example, the childminder introduces new words and encourages repetition to reinforce learning. She proactively encourages children who are ready to make marks or begin to write their name. Children enjoy purposeful adult-led activities as well as play they initiate themselves. For example, they develop their physical skills as they carefully plant seeds and are encouraged to explore and learn, using simple technology. The childminder regularly shares children's progress reports with parents to enable them to support their children's learning at home. All children acquire the skills needed for their future learning. They socialise well with other children and adults.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are secure and settled, and form positive relationships with the childminder. This helps to support children's emotional well-being. Overall, children learn about healthy lifestyles and keeping safe, and develop an open attitude to people's differences. They behave well, enjoy exploring the play environment and are keen to learn. They are easily able to initiate their own play and learning. For example, they choose puzzles or use the role-play area to engage in pretend play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children work comfortably within the range of development typical for their age, taking into account their starting points. Children are polite and know about sharing and taking turns. They are motivated learners who are confident to move on to the next step in their learning.
