Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's policies and procedures and evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises. The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views. The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection procedures. She is fully aware of the potential signs of abuse and neglect and understands the process for reporting any concerns. The childminder assesses risks regularly and has effective policies in place to help ensure that she keeps children safe on outings and in her home. Relevant information is exchanged with parents and other early years providers to promote continuity in children's care and learning. The well-qualified childminder applies experience and knowledge from her previous role in a school and her recent training to ensure that the quality of her teaching and learning is good.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder's effective teaching encourages children to be motivated learners. She understands her responsibilities relating to the progress check for children aged between two and three years. The childminder regularly observes children during their play. These observations and information from other providers and parents support her planning of sufficiently challenging activities to help children progress. She engages children in conversation about their experiences at home and nursery which helps to support their growing confidence and communication skills. The childminder uses appropriate language to improve children's awareness of numbers, shape and colour. One example of this is when children enjoy playing simple board games. This encourages their concentration and helps them to identify written numerals and promotes other mathematical and problem- solving skills.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children settle quickly and enjoy spending time with the childminder. The childminder responds well to children's emotional needs and recognises when they need reassurance and comfort. She promotes children's independence and personal care skills well, relative to their ages and capabilities. Children help with age-appropriate tasks and tidy away resources after use. Regular outings in the local area help children to gain an understanding of the wider community. For example, children enjoy visits to the local library, community centre, park and beach. They benefit from exercise and fresh air outdoors and practise their physical skills. The childminder provides healthy meals and children follow good hygiene routines. Children learn about their own culture and those of others through activities and discussions.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make at least the expected progress in their learning and development from their starting points. They are confident and happy learners and are acquiring good independence skills. Children are developing their social skills and they are polite and behave well. Children count and identify shapes as they play, which helps to promote their mathematical skills. Overall, children develop the key skills and attitudes necessary for future learning and are prepared well for school.
