This provision is good

 The childminder is enthusiastic about children's achievements. Children are keen to share what they have learnt with her and gain confidence from the childminder's reaction.  The opinions of parents and children are important to the childminder. She seeks their views and regularly reflects on her practice to make positive changes that benefit children's outcomes.  The childminder interacts well with children during activities and she makes learning fun. For example, she asks children interesting questions that challenge them and move them on in their learning. This helps them make good progress and prepares them for school.  Children are able to learn without distraction and their behaviour is good. For instance, they support their friends during activities, take turns and speak to the childminder politely.  Children take part in a wide range of activities with the childminder to promote their learning. For example, they enjoy a number of interesting visits in the local area.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always share the best possible information about children's learning with other early years providers where children attend.  The childminder does not consistently provide opportunities for children to learn about diversity and other cultures.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen links with other early years settings that children attend to improve consistency in their learning  increase opportunities for children to learn about diversity and other cultures.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed interactions between the childminder and children.  The inspector discussed the safeguarding procedures in place with the childminder and viewed policies.  The inspector viewed the childminder's assessment documents and children's learning journals.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is motivated to make changes and has a clear vision of how she wants to improve her practice. For example, she noted that some children prefer to learn outdoors and plans to change the access route to allow them to spend more time outside. The qualified childminder is keen to further her knowledge of early years. For example, she reads about relevant changes in legislation and about interesting ways to teach children. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection and the action to take if she has any worries about the welfare of a child. She has good methods of risk assessing the environment to help ensure children remain safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses good procedures to enable her to assess children's learning accurately from their starting points and monitor their development. She adapts activities to ensure that children of all ages and abilities are able to make progress. For example, she promoted children's physical and mathematical development during an activity where they poured rice into numbered containers using funnels. The childminder extended this as she encouraged children to estimate whether the rice would fit into different containers. The childminder has close links with parents. She ensures that they are always aware of children's progress to help them carry on the learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The environment is bright, stimulating and children have access to a wide range of resources. The childminder builds strong bonds with children and they are comfortable to separate from their parents. She talks to children about the need to keep themselves safe. For example, children remembered that they had to wait for the 'lollipop lady' before they crossed the road. The childminder encourages healthy lifestyles and, for example, children eat a wide range of nutritious foods and talk about taste and texture. For instance, they remark that 'raspberries are nice but they make the tongue go funny.'

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children achieve well. They are highly sociable and work well with others to develop good friendships. Children develop a good awareness of the wider world, for example, during trips to the beach and the museum. They are confident in their own abilities and learn to support their own care needs. Children are emotionally prepared to move on in their learning.
