Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's interactions with the children during activities and looked at a range of resources and equipment.  The inspector held discussions with the parents, the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector and the childminder evaluated the effectiveness of an activity together.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including records relating to children, and checked safeguarding procedures and feedback from parents.  The inspector had discussions with the childminder about policies and procedures, methods of assessing and planning for children's progress, and how she works with her assistant, parents and other providers.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows how to identify any concerns about a child's welfare and follow reporting procedures correctly. The childminder carries out thorough risk assessments to enable her to help keep children safe. The childminder effectively evaluates her provision; for example, she regularly requests views from parents to ensure future improvements in the service she offers. The childminder supports and coaches her assistant well. For example, she discusses how to improve his childcare practice with him and encourages him to complete further training to enable him to effectively care for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has high expectations of children and provides them with a variety of good learning experiences. She interacts well with children, for example prompting and encouraging them to think and question their thoughts regularly during play. The childminder effectively promotes children's social and emotional needs. For example, children enjoy pretend cooking activities. Children make their own decisions about their play; for example, they select cars and enjoy manoeuvring them across the floor quickly, learning how things work.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder effectively promotes children's understanding of diversity. For example, children join in celebrations and frequently play with resources reflecting differences so they understand about their own culture and those of others. The childminder reminds children about safety, such as the dangers of crossing busy roads. She effectively helps children to be independent and confident. For example, children are beginning to attend to their personal needs. They are also generally becoming more aware of the importance of following good hygiene routines. The childminder helps prepare children for the next stage in their learning, for example, as she takes them to visit the local school and she reads and discusses with them about its expectations.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are secure and happy. For example, they develop a positive outlook and are eager to be independent and enjoy their play. Children understand about simple mathematics, such as patterns, shapes and sizes, when using modelling materials. Children interact well with others; for example, they have good relationships with other children and adults. They develop the important skills needed for moving on to school.
