This provision is good

 Partnerships with parents have a positive impact on children's learning and development. There are good two-way systems for sharing information about children's needs and achievements. Staff keep parents well informed about how their children are developing. They give them ideas on how to support their children's learning at home.  Staff help children lead a healthy lifestyle. Children have many opportunities to be physically active and have access to plenty of fresh air and exercise. Staff encourage children to eat healthily and support them to learn about good hygiene practices and to keep themselves safe.  Staff meet the needs of disabled children and those with special educational needs effectively. Additional support is put in place quickly when required to ensure children make consistent progress from their starting points. They are helped to take small steps in their learning to ensure they are secure in their knowledge and skills

development.  Children enjoy playing with a wide variety of good quality toys and materials. Activities are carefully planned around their needs and interests. Children explore freely, use their imagination and make good progress over time.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not make the best use of information they gain from comparing the progress made by different groups of children. They have not made sure they use it to target planning and teaching very precisely, in order to support all groups to make rapid progress in their learning.  Although all children are making good progress in their literacy skills overall, staff have not made sure that those who prefer to play and learn outdoors have the same opportunities to build on their early reading skills as those who prefer to be inside.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of information about the progress of different groups of children and precisely target teaching to address any variations, so that all of them are fully supported to make the best possible progress  enhance the opportunities provided for children who prefer to play and learn outdoors to build further on their good early reading skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the nursery manager and the provider. He looked at relevant documentation, such as the nursery's self-evaluation and evidence of the suitability of staff.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The manager is well qualified and successful in providing good quality care and learning for the children in her care. Staff use their knowledge and skills to have a positive impact on the overall experiences and development of children. They actively work in partnership with other professionals to develop the provision and swiftly bring about improvement. Self-evaluation takes account of the views of parents to make sure changes have a positive benefit for children and families. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff place a high priority on keeping children safe and know what action to take if they have concerns about their welfare. Staff have good opportunities to learn from each other and improve their professional practice. This actively includes them in improving standards. Regular supervision helps the manager to identify the quality of teaching and to consider the impact training is having on improving the learning experiences of

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff skilfully guide and extend children's learning because they know their needs and interests well. They provide a good focus on developing children's language and communication skills by repeating phrases and teaching rhymes to help them develop clear patterns of speech. Babies are provided with a range of resources that encourages them to be independent and to develop good physical skills. Toddlers enjoy playing with construction toys and outdoor group games. Staff support them enthusiastically, providing regular praise for children's achievements. This further motivates them to learn. Pre- school staff are good at preparing children for school and the future. Group activities are planned that help children listen to each other and take turns in their play. Children are independent, confident and learn to respect each other.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The nursery is warm, welcoming and friendly and children of all ages quickly settle into the routine of the day. This helps to prepare them well for the next stage in their learning. Children develop secure relationships with staff. Parents comment positively on the impact this has on their child's confidence and well-being. Staff set high expectations of good behaviour and support children to respect and celebrate differences in each other. Outings in the local community are used to help children learn about the world around them and to develop their social skills away from the nursery.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children are supported to make good progress from their individual starting points. Children are learning to be independent. For example, they choose a drink of water or milk at the snack table and pour it for themselves. Children listen to and follow instructions well and demonstrate their very good manners.
