This provision is good

 The childminder monitors children's development effectively and quickly identifies any weaknesses in their learning. She knows how to find appropriate help from other relevant professionals, if necessary, to help ensure that all children make good progress.  The childminder has a good understanding of how to promote children's learning and involves parents in sharing information about their children's play interests. She makes good use of her observations and ongoing assessments to plan interesting experiences.  Children behave well. The childminder is a good role model and promotes sharing, turn- taking and good manners during daily routines and play.  The childminder promotes experiences to help children to understand about their local area and the world around them. For example, they regularly visit the beach, parks and the local library.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses opportunities to discuss the benefits of the nutritious food she supplies to help children understand how to eat healthily.  On occasion, the childminder does not make the best of opportunities to develop children's mathematical learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the support for children to understand how to make healthy choices in relation to food  improve opportunities for children to develop their mathematical knowledge.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children engaged in activities and the childminder's interaction with them.  The inspector sampled a range of documents, including risk assessments, policies and the children's files.  The inspector spoke with the children and childminder at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector took into account the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The qualified childminder ensures she keeps her knowledge up to date through training, research and networking with other childminders to share good practice. For example, she has used her learning to promote opportunities to enhance children's knowledge and understanding of the world. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder completes regular child protection training and knows who to contact if she has a concern. She has a good understanding of her responsibilities to promote children's welfare and protect them from harm. The childminder reflects well on the quality of her provision and includes the views of parents and children. This helps her to identify and target areas for improvement.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plays alongside children as they independently explore the good variety of resources she provides. She offers good opportunities for children to learn about the natural world. For example, they grow vegetables from seeds in the childminder's allotment and enjoy eating their produce. The childminder promotes discussion to support children's understanding of how plants grow. For example, she gives clear explanations about strong root growth and the need for water and warmth to help the growing process. The childminder promotes children's interests in literacy well. For example, she encourages them to tell stories from their favourite books in their own words, using the illustrations to help them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder helps children to develop independence skills. For example, children confidently take an active role in the preparation of their healthy snacks. They have good opportunities to develop essential social skills to help them with moving on to pre-school and school. For example, they visit local groups and learn to mix and form friendships with other children. Children are secure in their relationships with the childminder. They feel safe, emotionally secure and greet new people with confidence. The childminder offers children daily opportunities to develop their physical skills. For example, they play outdoors and learn about the benefits of exercise.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children benefit from their time spent with the childminder. They concentrate for good periods of time on activities that interest them. Children are confident communicators and enjoy discussing past events in their lives. For example, they confidently recall previous activities and discuss the process of growing tomato plants, remembering that a caterpillar ate some of the fruit. All children make good progress and are prepared well for their next stages in learning and for school.
