This provision is good
The childminder reviews children's progress, in order to identify and address any gaps in their development. Assessments are accurate and show children's good progress from their starting points. The childminder is skilled at supporting children's personal development. Children behave well and play cooperatively. They are learning how to form friendships. The childminder joins in with children's play and uses her good interactions to extend their learning further. She models language and talks to children as they play. Children are developing good communication skills in readiness for their move on to school. Children learn to manage their self-care needs independently, so that they can do things for themselves. Children enjoy a range of nutritious food and receive daily opportunities for fresh air. They are learning how to live a healthy lifestyle. Children show how they feel safe and have formed secure emotional relationships with

the childminder. They explore their environment with ease and make free choices as they initiate their own play. The childminder teaches children about different cultures and traditions. One of the ways she does this is by celebrating different festivals, such as Chinese New Year.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder is not always successful in gathering information from parents about what their children do and learn at home. Links with the school that children also attend are not yet fully effective in promoting their continuation of learning.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

gain more detailed information from parents about their children's learning at home, in order to plan ways to complement and build on these experiences strengthen links with teachers at the local school and share information about children's unique learning needs.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities in the main playroom and looked at other areas used for childminding, including outside. The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder. The inspector asked the childminder questions about her practice at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector looked at children's assessment records. The inspector checked evidence of suitability of all household members and the childminder's qualifications. She also discussed with the childminder how she reflects on her practice to make improvements. The inspector took account of parents' written views on the quality of the provision.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a secure understanding of what to do if she has a concern about a child's welfare. She is qualified and experienced. The childminder attends training and liaises with other professionals to help her to keep her knowledge and understanding up to date. Children are provided with good quality care and learning. The childminder uses self-reflection and considers the views of parents when identifying the strengths of her practice, as well as areas for improvement. She has successfully addressed the recommendations from her previous inspection. This reflects her commitment to continual improvement. The childminder has good working relationships with staff at the local pre-school. She shares information to support children's learning and development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder has a secure understanding of children's abilities. She demonstrates effective teaching. The childminder completes regular observations and identifies children's next steps in learning. She organises fun and purposeful play that she adapts appropriately to meet the learning needs of all children. Older children and toddlers explore and experiment with a range of media. Younger children use spoons to fill and empty containers. Older children say and write the initial letter of their own name in the mixture. The childminder promotes children's mathematical language and concepts well. Older children have a good understanding of number. They count how many bowls they will need for their friends and learn how to recognise when they need one more.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder meets children's care needs well. She gathers information from parents about children's likes and dislikes before they start at the provision. Children appear settled and happy as they play in a well resourced home-from-home environment. Children attend toddler groups and other places within the community, such as the garden centre. This helps them to build their confidence, social skills and extend their knowledge of the world around them. Children have many opportunities to be physically active. They go on local walks, enjoy painting the fence with water and taking part in assault courses.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are gaining the necessary skills for their future education. They are learning to take turns and share fairly during group games. Children can recall past events and talk about people who are not present. They show how they can listen, understand and respond to questions during their play. Children hold lively discussions, jumping from topic to topic. Children engage in role-play activities and imitate the actions of adults. All children are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age.
