understanding and skills in providing effective care for children with different abilities.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not have many opportunities to explore and extend their early writing skills, to support their literacy development as fully as possible.  The childminder does not always extend children's learning of number, shape, size and measure.

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at areas of the home used for childminding.  The inspector observed the childminder playing with the children in a range of activities.  The inspector looked at a sample of policies, and discussed children's assessment records.  The inspector checked evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and discussed the self-evaluation process.  The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in writing.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her responsibility to protect children from harm. She makes good use of training to keep up to date with the most recent safeguarding procedures. The childminder monitors and assesses children's development effectively to enable her to plan well for the next steps in their learning. She has developed self-evaluation well since her last inspection, which helps her to check and improve her practices to support good outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a very good understanding of how children learn and helps them to enjoy learning through their play. She provides activities and experiences that thoroughly absorb children and develop their imaginative skills well. For example, using the children's interests, she read a story about a fairy garden with them, and extended their learning by encouraging them to create their own miniature gardens. Children delighted in using a wide range of interesting resources to make their creations. The childminder promoted children's language skills very well, helping them to use a wide vocabulary to describe the different items in their gardens.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder is warm, affectionate and exceptionally sensitive to children's individual needs. She frequently praises children, and their self-esteem and confidence flourish, supporting excellent independence and self-assurance. Children receive exceptionally good support to test their ideas and solve problems. For example, when baking cakes, the childminder encouraged them to think about what ingredients they needed and how they would add them to make the right mixture. Children develop extensive physical skills and learn how to keep themselves safe. They skilfully used tools and equipment to make their cakes. The childminder provides extraordinary support for children with a wide range of needs and abilities. She works exceptionally closely with parents to provide specific levels of support to ensure the inclusion of all children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and very active learners who lead and develop their own play. Children display very good language skills and have lots of time and space to independently play and explore, helping them to try new things and choose how to do them. Children have very strong imaginations and concentration, and have very good social skills. Children's exceptionally strong self-esteem and emotional security prepare them well for the next stage in their learning and moving on to school.
