Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and the quality of teaching. The inspector had a discussion with the childminder and interacted with children at appropriate times. The inspector sampled documentation, personal records and assessments, and information from parents. The inspector checked the childminder's suitability and qualification. The inspector checked how information is shared with parents.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The experienced childminder uses her knowledge and understanding of the children to meet their needs. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder knows what to do if she has concerns that a child is at risk of harm. However, she does not have a current paediatric first aid qualification. This means she is not able to deal with minor accidents and injuries and this puts children at risk. The childminder has a good relationship with parents and schools. She works closely with them to share information and give children the best start in life. The childminder evaluates her practice and identifies areas that she can develop to improve experiences for the children.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gives children plenty of opportunities to explore, play and make choices. They can select activities and resources that interest them. For example, they choose to play with dinosaurs and cars, and then decide to read a book. The childminder takes account of their interests. For example, the game of Chinese chequers is a favourite activity at the moment so she provides time to play this. Children are confident to express themselves and they develop independent skills. For example, they tidy away the toys before leaving for school. The childminder works closely with local schools to make sure that she offers activities that complement what children are learning there.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder's failure to maintain a current first-aid qualification compromises children's welfare. She cares for children affectionately and gets to know them well. She uses this knowledge and information from parents to meet their needs. The childminder manages children's behaviour effectively. They respond well and remember to say 'please' and 'thank you'. They greet visitorspolitely. The childminder provides a warm and welcoming environment where children enjoy exploring and having fun. Overall, there is a wide range of resources, although there are fewer toys that show positive images of diversity. Children do not learn fully about the cultures of others and find out more about the wider world. The children are physically active and keen to take part in outdoor activities. For example, they enjoy regular outings to the park and feeding the birds.
