This provision is good

 The childminder has a good knowledge and understanding of how children learn and develop. Children make good progress in their learning and development from their individual starting points.  Children follow good hygiene practices and they enjoy healthy snacks and home-cooked meals.  The childminder reflects on her strengths and areas for development. She evaluates her service effectively and encourages parents to share their views through discussions.  Children behave well. They receive praise and encouragement, which increases their levels of confidence and boosts their self-esteem.  Partnerships with parents and others are good. The childminder shares valuable information with them to keep them fully informed about their children's progress and the care provided.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 There are few opportunities to fully support children's understanding of diversity across the educational programme.  The childminder does not provide a wide range of free-play experiences for children to initiate their own play, especially for those who prefer learning outdoors.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities to develop children's understanding of diversity across the educational programme  extend the range of learning experiences for children who prefer to learn outdoors.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home and in the garden.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's records and planning, and discussed the childminder's policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection and the procedures to follow if she has concerns. She carries out thorough risk assessments of her home and other environments that the children use to keep them safe and secure. The childminder attends training courses, accesses the internet and seeks support from other professionals to continually develop her good knowledge and keep her skills up to date. For example, she has introduced a 'toy choosing book' for children. The childminder successfully assesses children's progress and their next steps for learning. Parents speak highly of the childminding service they receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans interesting activities to capture and build on the children's interest. She observes them during their play and plans their next steps to help them make good progress in their learning. During an adult-led activity, children enjoyed exploring number, colour, size and shape. For example, they used magnifying glasses to study bugs in their 'bug hotel'. They practised their writing as they recorded the bugs they found on their check lists and used books to find out more about them. This helped them to develop good literacy skills. The childminder helps children to develop good speaking and listening skills. For example, children enjoy talking about what they are doing, ask and respond to questions, sing songs and listen to stories. As they paint, join in role play and move to action songs, for example, they develop their creativity and imaginations. Children experience a range of activities, which help them to become curious learners.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop close relationships with the childminder and are relaxed in her care. They behave well and learn good manners. For example, they are reminded to say 'please' and 'thank you' during the routine of the day. The childminder makes good use of the local community to broaden children's learning experiences. For example, they enjoy outings to the park and pre-school groups, and visit the library to choose books. The childminder helps children learn to keep safe. For example, they help to sweep up spilt rice so they do not slip over. They also learn about road safety and practise the emergency procedure.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and they develop skills to help them prepare for the next stage in their education. The childminder helps children to become independent, for example, they learn to feed and dress themselves. They explore letters and the sounds they make, and have good opportunities to practise writing. Children develop good social skills, learn to share and take turns, and make friendships.
