This provision is good

 The provider is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She motivates her staff. Effective recruitment and staff development procedures ensure they are confident and well qualified. The manager and staff's teaching and care are good. They skilfully work together to advise and support families and to promote babies' and children's good health, safety and enjoyment.  Parents welcome regular opportunities to discuss their children's care and learning with staff. They appreciate that their views about their child's interests and abilities are reflected in staff's planning and teaching. Parents and staff often review children's progress together and agree how to follow up their future learning needs at nursery and at home.  Children are happy, settled and know the routines. The kind, attentive manager and staff calmly reassure children and ensure they know what is happening next. They welcome children's ideas for learning, praise their efforts and encourage them to record

their work. Children feel valued, develop a sense of belonging and are often confident to try something new.  The manager and staff relate well to children. They encourage babies to respond and express themselves and help older children to speak in different situations. The manager and staff promote children's expressive language as they describe what they are doing, act out roles, explore different materials and solve problems.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not always give children enough encouragement to consider how to manage risks and to safely negotiate space when moving in different ways.  Mixed-age group activities are not always planned well enough to make sure that all children are well supported to listen carefully and become fully involved.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 encourage children to consider how to manage risks and to safely negotiate space when moving in different ways  explore additional ways to promote children's listening skills and involvement during group activities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery provider, who is also the manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the nursery provider and spoke to staff and children during the inspection.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the provider's plans for improvement and evidence of the suitability and training of staff working in the nursery.  The inspector spoke to a small selection of parents during the inspection and took account of their views and the views of other parents from their written feedback to the provider.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The manager and staff effectively monitor the nursery's provision and make positive changes. Robust staff performance procedures and tracking of children's progress help the manager to assess the quality of teaching and learning. The manager and staff use information they gain from attending training courses to develop their practice. For instance, they have used their new knowledge to better promote younger children's good behaviour. New equipment and resources have enhanced children's imagination and exploration. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The manager and staff attend regular training. They have a sound knowledge of abuse and neglect and know what action to take if they have concerns about a child. The manager and staff's contacts with local organisations enable them to help families to access other services. They work with other agencies to carefully monitor vulnerable children's welfare and to provide good

support for disabled children and those with special educational needs. Well-established contacts with local schools support a smooth move for children into full-time education.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The manager and staff accurately assess babies' and children's starting points and ongoing development. They identify appropriate next steps for each child's learning. The manager and staff organise rich and varied activities. They successfully follow up children's learning needs, especially during small-group activities led by the children's key person. In the main, children are keen to join in activities. They often use resources imaginatively to develop their ideas and to act out roles using, for example, models they have made from construction toys. Children eagerly investigate different media and materials. They make marks with chalks and create shapes in sand and soil.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are well behaved. The manager and staff encourage their sharing, turn taking and cooperation. They sensitively help young children to understand the consequences of their actions. Children are nurtured and thrive. The manager and staff carefully cater for their care, health and dietary needs. They ensure children who are unwell or injured have prompt, appropriate treatment. The manager and staff consistently promote babies' and children's comfort and hygiene. They sensitively help children to independently manage their self-care. Children are well nourished and make healthy choices about what to eat and drink. They are looked after in clean, safe and secure surroundings. Staff supervise children effectively. They give them good guidance, so children behave safely and sensibly when they play and move around the premises.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress. Innovative use of funding has enabled children to enjoy more challenging active play and music and movement sessions. These activities have helped children to develop their physical control and coordination. Children are well prepared for school. They readily make choices, discuss their ideas, experiences and work and tackle practical problems using numbers, colours and shapes.
