This provision is good

 The manager and staff track children's progress. This helps them to effectively identify, and quickly put in place, measures to close any gaps in learning.  Parents share information prior to children joining the playgroup which enables the key person to assess each child's starting points. This helps staff to accurately plan and meet individual learning needs from the beginning.  Children are engaged and interested in learning. They demonstrate they can play cooperatively with each other, using their imagination as they share their unique ideas during small-world play to develop a storyline.  Children demonstrate that they are able to understand and follow directions. They excitedly march around the room with staff, pretending that they are soldiers. They also enjoy identifying various parts of their face and body when they are named in a rhyme.  The staff team creates a relaxed and welcoming environment for children and their

families. Children clearly show that they have formed strong bonds with their key person and other staff.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, staff do not consistently adapt activities, such as snack time, to precisely meet the individual abilities of children at different stages of development.  Staff do not always share precise information about children's learning and development with parents to promote further consistency in their continued progress.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 adapt activities to consistently provide appropriate challenge for children of differing ages and abilities  extend information sharing with parents to include more precise information about children's individual learning and development needs.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the playgroup manager.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the manger and staff. She looked at relevant documentation, such as the playgroup's self-evaluation processes and suitability evidence of staff working at the setting.  The inspector spoke to a small number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views through the feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. All staff have completed safeguarding training. They are aware of what action to take if they have any concerns about a child attending. The recently appointed manager has worked hard, alongside her staff, to make significant improvements to the service offered. Parent's and children's feedback is gathered through frequent discussion and the use of parental questionnaires. The manager has effectively used all information gained to critically evaluate practice. She and her team also work well in partnership with the local authority and other professionals. This has contributed towards the consistent improvements made. The staff team is well qualified. They attend regular supervision meetings and complete a yearly appraisal of their performance with the manager. The quality of care and teaching is further enhanced through staff's participation in a wide range of ongoing professional training opportunities.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Ongoing observations and assessments of children are completed by staff to ensure that they remain aware of their development levels. Subsequent planning builds on what children know and can do and effectively reflects their specific needs. As a result, staff are able to provide a range of suitable activities that support all children, including disabled children and those with special educational needs. Children enjoy spending time with their friends and taking part in activities. The differing abilities of children are considered by staff during group discussion times. As a result, when children choose to take part, staff actively help to support their participation. Staff use a wide range of teaching techniques. Children think through their own ideas as they play with an assortment of bricks. They manipulate and carefully work out how to fit them together to balance a range of shapes. Children show that they are able to problem solve as they work together in a small group.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff introduce mathematical language and children eagerly count to find out how many levels they have built.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Behaviour management is good. Children are encouraged to share toys and resources and take part in games that require them to take turns. Children are provided with a good range of opportunities to learn about their own and others' cultures and traditions. Staff also encourage parents to come into the playgroup and share aspects of their culture with the children. Good opportunities are provided for physical play and children enjoy daily chances to be outside in the fresh air. Children are beginning to understand how their bodies work. During a discussion with staff, some children recognise that their heart beats faster after running around. Children know that before eating their snacks they must wash off the dirt so that they do not get ill.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children's progress, relative to their starting points, is good. Children develop the essential skills to ensure that they are well prepared for their move on to school.
