children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged Good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection Ofsted judges that it has Sustained effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The service this home provides to young people and the outcomes they achieve is good. The majority make excellent progress in managing their behaviour and in reducing the number of times they go missing. As a direct result of this, some have achieved reunification with their families whereas others have moved successfully into independent living. Staff continue to offer help, support and guidance to young people living alone as well as those that have returned home to live with their families.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Positive relationships exist between staff and young people. They feel listened to and decisions about changes affecting their lives are discussed honestly with them. Staff liaise effectively with education providers, colleges and training agencies to ensure young people are given the opportunities they deserve to progress and to achieve their maximum potential. Staff have had some success in maintaining young people in education and in supporting them to look for training opportunities and employment. Maintaining their education and helping them to develop a work ethic helps young people to achieve their maximum potential.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The individual health care needs of young people are known and understood by all staff. Each one has a health care plan in place that records what their individual healthcare needs are and how they will be met. When necessary, access to specialist health care provision, such as child and adolescent mental health services and drug and alcohol workers are fully supported by staff.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

A requirement made at the previous inspection in relation to young people eating a healthy diet has been fully addressed. Young people are encouraged to eat a healthy, nutritious diet and they are actively encouraged and helped to develop a healthy lifestyle. This will help to improve their overall health and well-being.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people are encouraged to develop new hobbies and interests. For example, attending the gym. In addition, they are helped to continue with hobbies and interests they had prior to admission. For instance, kayaking and mountain biking. A previous requirement in relation to the quality of the home’s risk assessments for activities has been addressed. Risk assessments are now robust and help to keep young people safer.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Keeping young people safe and well remains a paramount concern for all staff. Through hard work and perseverance, staff have seen a marked improvement in the frequency at which some young people go missing and put themselves at risk. One member of staff said, ‘One social worker thinks we’ve worked wonders with one young person. They really don’t how we’ve managed to turn things around.’

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Occasionally, young people experience turmoil and crises in their lives that manifests itself in friction and tension between themselves and staff. When significant incidents occur, notifications to Ofsted are made in a timely manner and risk assessments updated.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home does not have a registered manager in place. Internal and external monitoring systems are in place and help to identify any concerns about how the home is run. Action taken to address any concerns raised in the monitoring process are addressed quickly by the home’s acting manager. The acting manager and the staff team are aware of, and are committed to, continuous improvement. Reports produced as a result of external monitoring processes make a clear judgement on the overall safety and well-being of young people.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
