Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not complete a written summary of children's progress when they are two years of age and share this with parents, as required.  The childminder does not always establish effective communication with parents or other settings children attend, to effectively support children's learning and promote their home languages.  The childminder does not consistently help children to understand how they are similar or different to others, to fully promote their awareness of diversity.  The childminder's arrangements for self-evaluation do not help her to spot weaknesses in her practice and ensure she meets requirements. She does not develop her knowledge and skills effectively, to improve her teaching skills and outcomes for children to a good standard.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder has warm relationships with the children and positively promotes their well-being.  The childminder gives children plenty of praise and support in their play. Children learn the basic skills they need in order to progress to the next stages of their learning.  The childminder helps children to make their own decisions in their play. Children are confident, and select and use a range of resources, to support their own play ideas.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve how well the assessment requirements are understood and implemented, with particular regard to completing a written progress summary for children between the ages of two and three years, and sharing this information with parents 22/06/2016

p.2

Due Date

 establish a regular two-way flow of information sharing with parents and any other settings children attend, to consistently help children to learn and to better understand and promote their home languages. 25/04/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 develop the system of self-evaluation to identify all weaknesses, meet all requirements, and rapidly improve practice and the outcomes for children  improve opportunities for ongoing professional development, to continually improve teaching skills and children's learning experiences  provide children with opportunities to develop their awareness of the similarities and differences between themselves and others in their lives, to help them learn more about diversity.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector viewed a range of documentation, including policies and procedures, and children's records.  The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children and their daily play routines.  The inspector spoke with parents and took account of their written views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands what to do if she is concerned about children's safety, including following local child protection procedures. She minimises hazards to children's safety and helps them understand how to stay safe. For example, she reminds children to finish eating before talking. The childminder has not kept up to date with all requirements and legislation to effectively improve practice to a good standard. For example, she has not sought to develop her knowledge to improve her teaching skills, or her ability to carry out required assessments for younger children. The childminder does not sufficiently monitor some aspects of children's progress or make sure that her teaching is improving, to promote better outcomes.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder understands the needs of the children in her care, with regard to their physical and social skills. She supports their literacy skills as they play. For example, she helps children recognise and name letters of the alphabet. The childminder makes observations of children at play, but has not completed the required progress summaries for children aged two years. However, she observes and assesses children's learning soundly overall to help them make steady progress. She gives parents daily feedback about children's daily play activities, but does not share the required assessments to help them fully understand the progress their children are making. The childminder does not fully work with parents to encourage children to develop and use their home languages in their play, to help them progress as well as possible.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Children use imagination and creativity as they play. They develop the physical skills they need to move on to the next stage of learning. The childminder understands how to help children prepare for changes in their lives, such as starting school. The childminder does not use what she knows about children's lives, including their home backgrounds, to effectively promote their learning and understanding of the differences between themselves and others. Children enjoy fresh air and exercise each day. The childminder promotes healthy eating practices and develops children's hygiene routines. Children learn to wash their hands before meals and manage toilet visits independently.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children make some steady progress overall. They invite the childminder into their play and develop mathematical skills, such as counting and solving problems. For example, they count the pens they are using and match them to the correctly coloured lids. However, children, including those speaking additional languages, do not make as much progress as possible because the quality of teaching and assessment is not yet good.
