children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The young people that live at this home have all experienced an unsettled lifestyle prior to their admission but have settled well into the home’s routine and boundaries. Despite their complex needs, and, on occasion, the display of challenging or risk-taking behaviour, they are all making progress. Some are nearing adulthood and are developing their independence skills. Others are attending school regularly and taking greater responsibility for their actions.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Staff are resilient and treat young people with the respect they deserve despite the challenges they face. They are excellent role models and offer ongoing encouragement and support. They are fully committed to helping young people to reduce their risk-taking behaviour and to stay safe. Good role modelling and consistent handling helps young people develop socially acceptable behaviour and learn appropriate ways to deal with their anger and frustration.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Staff are effective in promoting young people’s physical and emotional welfare. They have a full understanding of each young person’s health needs and record them within individual care plans. Staff fully support young people’s engagement with health professionals, including, where necessary, child and adolescent mental health services. This promotes good outcomes for young people as well as providing them with consistent care and support.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people are encouraged to have aspirations for themselves and to develop hobbies and interests. For instance, one young person is involved in the National Citizen Service and undertakes voluntary work. Another enjoys skateboarding and basketball. Staff show determination in helping young people to achieve their maximum potential.

p.2

Transitions to and from the home are good. The registered manager fully considers all referrals made to the home. The potential impact of admitting a new young person into the home on the stability of the existing group is fully considered. Staff contribute effectively to the pathway planning process for individual young people and support them to learn daily living skills. They advocate for the young people in their care to ensure they are fully supported by the local authority to move into independence. In addition, staff recognise that moving into independence is a big step for any young person to take. In order to help reduce feelings of anxiety, isolation or loneliness, staff offer outreach support to young people that have moved on.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home’s management team know that the safety and welfare of the young people is paramount. They have reviewed the circumstances in which notifiable incidents are referred to Ofsted. As a result, these events are quickly addressed and notifications to Ofsted are appropriately made. This shows that the home operates in an open, transparent manner.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Internal monitoring systems used within the home to measure each young person’s progress have been reviewed. The reports now include an analysis of each young person’s attendance at school, education or training. The registered manager takes appropriate action to ensure all young people receive the level of education to which they are entitled.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

In addition, the registered manager and the staff team have, despite a period of disruption at the home, remained resolute in their determination to provide young people with good quality care. One member of staff said, ‘It’s been a very difficult time in recent months. Some days were really tough and hard to get through but I think we’re now back on an even keel.’ Staff have worked extremely hard to rebuild positive relationships with neighbours, to replace damaged furniture and to ensure the home remains well decorated. This helps young people to feel valued.

What the inspection judgements mean

At the interim inspection we make a judgement on whether the home has improved in effectiveness, sustained effectiveness, or declined in effectiveness since the previous full inspection. This is in line with the Inspection of children's homes: framework for inspection.

p.5

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
