p.1

This provision is good

 Staff use a well–established planning system to capture children’s interests, likes and dislikes. They use this information effectively to create exciting and engaging learning areas for the children to explore.  Children are supported very well in their move from pre-school to school. Children develop the skills they need to be ready for their next stage in learning.  Children are very well behaved. Staff set clear boundaries for children and gently remind them of how they should behave.  Since the last inspection, the manager has worked hard to raise the overall standard of practice within the pre-school. She has welcomed advice and support from the local authority and aspires to continually improve.  The manager ensures staff are well-deployed around the pre-school offering good quality teaching to engage children in their learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not always provide children who require additional support from staff to concentrate on that 1-1 support. This means, they struggle to stay focused on activities and sometimes miss the intended learning experiences.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support staff more effectively to extend their teaching skills, to strengthen support for children with specific individual needs so that they can progress even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector observed practice both indoors and outside.  The inspector held discussions with leaders and managers.  The inspector spoke with parents and carers at the beginning of the inspection.  The inspector sampled documentation such as planning, policies and procedures.  The inspector checked the suitability checks of the staff members.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. All staff have received up-to-date training and are fully aware of what they should do if they have a concern about a child. All staff have first aid training and a good understanding of how to keep children safe and secure and protect them from harm. The pre-school has a new manager who has recently made changes to the way staff receive supervisions and support from leaders. This includes staff observing each other’s practice to identify any weaknesses in their interactions with the children. This has improved the quality of teaching. The leaders work well with the staff to monitor the provision effectively, taking into account the views of parents and children. For example, parents choose new equipment to further develop children’s physical skills in the outdoor area.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff have a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and how children learn, and they create an exciting environment for them to explore. Staff are skilled at engaging children in conversation by asking effective questions and modelling good use of language. Staff develop children’s understanding of number as they count their play dough buns in the baking tray. They help children develop an understanding of capacity through opportunities to experiment by pouring water into containers and then making their own puddles in the playground. Staff encourage children to recognise letters, colours and numbers in their environment through everyday interactions. As a result, children are progressing well in all areas of their development.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop a high level of confidence and self-motivation. They concentrate well on their chosen activities. Staff are extremely skilled at promoting children’s independence skills, children are encouraged to manage tasks for themselves and receive praise when they succeed. For example, children find their own coat peg and they easily select resources from well-organised provision. Parents speak highly of all the staff and are confident to leave their children at the pre-school. Parents feel their children have progressed well since they started and are happy with the care provided.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Staff have developed an effective system to ensure funding is used appropriately. This means good quality resources are used to help children acquire all the basic skills they need to move on to school. Children are eager to participate and keen to learn. They are successful learners who make plenty of independent choices about what they want to do. Consequently, children are making good progress in their learning and development.
