This provision is good

 The childminder organises a range of well-planned activities for children to help them to make good progress in their learning.  Children follow good hygiene routines. They enjoy healthy snacks and meals which help to promote their good health.  The childminder implements clear rules and boundaries to help manage children's behaviour. Children's behaviour is good. They develop confidence and good social skills that prepare them emotionally for school.  The childminder provides good-quality care. She attends short courses and uses the information gained to further encourage children to achieve well in their learning.  The childminder plans exciting activities for children and follows their interests. She ensures they are engaged and promotes their learning well.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently encourage children to develop more independence. On occasions, she does things for them that they could easily attempt to do for themselves.  The childminder's system for sharing information with other settings is not fully effective in promoting continuity in children's care and learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the opportunities that children have to attempt to do more everyday things for themselves, to further promote their independence  strengthen the communication with other settings so that children who attend more than one setting receive better consistency in their care and learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's home and in the garden.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector discussed a planned activity with the childminder, and the learning that had taken place.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written questionnaires.  The inspector looked at children's records and the childminder's planning documents, her self-evaluation and a range of other documents, including policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder regularly self-evaluates her work and plans well to promote future improvements. She works closely with parents to keep them informed about their children and to gain their views. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder demonstrates a good knowledge of how to safeguard children and of the procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child in her care. In addition, the childminder has policies and procedures in place to further support and underpin her practice. She completes regular risk assessments and has effective safety measures in place to keep children safe and secure on the premises. The childminder regularly tracks and reviews children's progress and uses the information to plan next steps in their learning, to ensure they are making good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses information from parents to establish children's starting points. She effectively plans and provides activities and resources to promote children's learning. For example, she promotes children's ability to learn about numbers through exciting activities. Children enjoy finding eggs with numbers on as they search the garden. They excitedly bring them back to her and show their skills by counting beyond 10. Children learn about the world around them and can confidently name animal habitats. The childminder uses these opportunities to introduce new words such as 'vegetation', which children then use during their play with toy dinosaurs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children confidently move around and enjoy exploring the toys and well-planned experiences. The childminder is responsive to their needs and joins in with their play when appropriate. She works well to make all children feel included and valued. She raises children's awareness and acceptance of differences between people in society, to fully encourage their awareness of diversity. Children learn about different countries and cultures. For example, the children enjoy regular contact with other children who have emigrated and are learning about their new cultures.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Older children enjoy activities that prepare them well for their future move to school. Children develop well socially. They gain good early reading, writing and mathematical skills. They play cooperatively and enjoy taking on responsibilities, for example, as they help to clear up after snacks. Children learn about the seasons, for instance, as they enjoy making creations that are linked to spring.
