This provision is good

 Children learn and develop well, as the environment is set up to support their interests and abilities. They enjoy many good opportunities to play and explore and are able to move freely between the indoors and outdoors.  Children's personal, social and emotional development is promoted well through regular praise and encouragement. Children form strong bonds and attachments with staff and peers and demonstrate through their play that they are happy and settled.  Children experience good continuity of care, learning and development because staff engage readily with parents and carers. Home visits enable parents to contribute to initial assessments of children's starting points and ensure that the children's key person knows how to plan for their smooth move into the nursery.  Staff establish good partnerships with parents. They regularly exchange information about children's progress, and parents share children's learning experiences from

home. As a result, a combined approach to helping children in the next steps of their learning is guaranteed.  Disabled children and those with special educational needs are supported effectively. Staff work very closely with parents and other professionals to help promote children's learning and development successfully.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children's developing creativity and imaginative skills are not consistently promoted. Occasionally, staff give children too much direction during art and craft activities.  Staff do not fully use the information gained from monitoring the progress of groups of children to demonstrate how identified gaps in learning are narrowing.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide older children with more consistent opportunities to be freely creative  strengthen the analysis of information gained from monitoring assessments and show how gaps are narrowing for different groups of children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's development and progress.  The inspector spoke to staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager and discussed the findings.  The inspector reviewed relevant documentation, including evidence of the suitability of staff, relevant training certificates and a selection of policies and procedures.  The inspector took into account the views of parents spoken to on the day and those recorded on questionnaires.  The inspector held a meeting with the manager and discussed the nursery's action plans.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff have a good understanding of child protection issues, as they undertake regular safeguarding training. Children's safety is given high priority by staff, who closely supervise children. Risk assessments, including daily checks, ensure the environment remains safe at all times. Effective recruitment and vetting systems ensure all staff working with children are suitable. The enthusiastic newly appointed manager carries out annual appraisals, and regular supervisions are used to closely monitor ongoing staff performance. Furthermore, staff observe one another's practice to help them develop their own and each other's teaching skills. The manager is fully aware of the importance of partnership working and has established good links with the local children's centre and other early years settings. She gathers good practice to implement in the nursery in her effort to ensure continuous improvement.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Since the last inspection, the manager has considerably enhanced the environment and the range of resources on offer for children. Staff ensure children have a choice of where they play. For example, they enjoy riding wheeled toys and playing ball games outdoors. Children practise their mark making in different ways. They use their fingers, toy cars and tools to make patterns in the sand and older children begin to write their own names. Babies enjoy playing with a range of sensory resources that encourages them to explore by touching and shaking bottles containing objects, such as glitter and colourful beads. They poke and prod play dough to make patterns and take great delight in playing in the water tray filled with bubbles. Older children are fascinated about the natural world as they learn about the food chain of insects. They enjoy their daily 'Wake up, Shake up' session as they dance and move their bodies. The sensory room provides all children,

especially those with special educational needs, with many beneficial play opportunities.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well. They learn to share and take turns and gain independence as they help themselves to toys. Staff help all children learn good hygiene practices and provide them with healthy and nutritious meals and snack. They provide interesting experiences and activities that help children gain an awareness of their own community and learn about the difference and diversity of the world around them. Children learn to manage risks safely as they manoeuvre carefully past one another when they ride bikes outdoors.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children, including those who receive funded early education, are confident learners and are motivated to engage in play and learning. Children make good progress in their learning in relation to their starting points. Children are developing key skills to help prepare them for starting school. Pre-school children serve their own meals and manage their own personal needs well. Children's communication and language development is supported very well, as staff specifically have a sharp focus on supporting those who speak English as an additional language.
