Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder has not kept her paediatric first-aid qualification up to date, as required. This is also a breach of the Childcare Register requirements.  The childminder does not keep a record of any medicine administered to children together with a record of parents' consent. This compromises children's good health and is a breach of the Childcare Register requirements.  The childminder does not accurately assess children's learning to identify their achievements and close any gaps in their learning to help them make good progress.  The childminder does not fully evaluate her practice. She has not identified where there are breaches in requirements or addressed weaknesses in her practice.  The childminder does not encourage children to manage their feelings and behaviour or help them to understand how their actions may affect others.  The childminder does not help children to understand about other people's cultures.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children are happy and build strong relationships with the childminder. She responds to their care needs sensitively. She helps them to develop their independence.  The childminder builds appropriate relationships with parents; she shares information with them about activities that their children enjoy and their care routines daily.  The childminder follows children's interests as they explore and investigate, and helps them to achieve what they set out to do. They make steady progress in their learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 maintain a relevant paediatric first-aid qualification to ensure children's safety at all times 23/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

 gain written permission from parents prior to administering medication and keep a written record of each time medicines are administered 24/03/2016

p.2

Due Date

 improve assessments of children's progress to identify their achievements and any gaps in their learning, and provide them with timely support to ensure children's continued progress. 23/05/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve self-evaluation to identify weaker areas of practice effectively and assess professional development needs to strengthen outcomes for children  strengthen strategies to help children tolerate delay when their needs are not immediately met and gain an understanding of how their actions may affect others  explore ways to build on children's understanding of other people's cultural differences and the similarities to their own.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the children's learning and the childminder's teaching practice during a range of activities.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at a sample of documentation, including the childminder's policies and the children's learning records.  The inspector checked evidence relating to the childminder's suitability to work with children.  The childminder reviewed parents' written feedback made available during the inspection and considered their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a clear understanding of how to keep children safe from harm. She knows how to identify concerns about children's welfare and how to report her concerns to the relevant authorities. The childminder accesses some relevant training for professional development. However, she does not have a paediatric first-aid qualification, which does not ensure the well-being of children at all times. The childminder reflects on elements of her practice. For example, she seeks parents' views about her service. However, she has not used self-evaluation to identify the weakness in the required written records and monitoring of children's progress. The childminder has effective partnerships with parents and shares digital information about children's experiences in the setting.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder helps children choose from a range of resources and encourages them to engage is some suitable activities. She helps children to learn early mathematical skills. For example, she models language about size as she encourages children to explore how different-sized boxes fit inside one another. However, the childminder does not use her assessments to identify where children may require additional help or provide challenging activities to help them to catch up quickly. The childminder develops children's communication skills and musical awareness. For example, she sings nursery rhymes with children and encourages them to join in.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder helps children gain an understanding of healthy eating and supports them to stay active. For example, she cooks homemade meals and takes children to local parks, where they benefit from outdoor learning. However, the childminder does not promote children's good health fully. For example, she does not follow the required written procedures when administering medication to children. The childminder does not consistently help children to adapt their behaviour in different social situations or talk about cultural traditions and celebrations, to promote their acceptance of other people.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children actively explore their environment. They are motivated to investigate how some things work and happen. Children learn to solve problems about size, shape and space. For example, they enjoy filling and emptying large boxes. They develop strength and physical skills, for example when they climb on apparatus at the park. Children acquire some skills that prepare them well for school. For example, they manage small tasks, such as their personal care, and help to tidy up toys when they have finished with them.
