This provision is good

 The childminder is aware of her strengths and effectively identifies areas she can improve. Parents are asked about their views on the service. The childminder uses this information to improve outcomes for children and their families.  The childminder knows children in her care. She is very knowledgeable about their individual stage of development. The childminder provides a good variety of activities and experiences that is stimulating and lots of fun.  The childminder has a very warm and caring approach towards children in her care. She is affectionate and speaks softly to them as she sensitively meets all of their emotional needs.  The childminder has developed strong relationships with parents. She shares her knowledge of what their children know and can do. The childminder also makes suggestions about how they can support their children's learning in their home environment.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently make the most of opportunities that arise during children's play to reinforce their growing understanding of healthy eating.  Some aspects of children's mathematical knowledge are not fully extended in a meaningful way as they play.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities in the childminder's home and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's training certificates and evidence of the suitability of adults living in the childminder's home.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is fully aware of the procedures she must follow in the event of a concern about a child in her care. She helps older children learn how to keep themselves safe from abuse and harm. The childminder keeps her safeguarding and first-aid knowledge up to date. She attends training and reads publications to keep abreast of changes in childcare. The childminder ensures parents are kept informed about all aspects of her provision. She provides them with detailed information about their children's current stage of development and her plans to extend their learning. Parents are extremely happy with the service they receive.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is a qualified teacher and has many years' experience in caring for young children. She uses her teaching skills effectively and plans activities she knows children will enjoy. The childminder observes children as they play and makes accurate assessments about what they need to do next to develop further. All children are making good progress. The activities are varied, stimulating and fully capture children's interests. One example of this is when they search for plastic fruits in a tray of dried pasta. Children have opportunities to fill and empty a range of different sized bowls. The childminder extends their learning by introducing vocabulary, such as full and empty. She also encourages them to use their senses and listen to the sounds the pasta makes when she shakes the tray.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's behaviour is very good. The childminder supports them in learning right from wrong. She talks to them about keeping safe. For example, she helps very young children understand how to sit safely on small chairs. Children's emotional needs are successfully supported. The childminder finds out as much as she can about their individual needs and personalities from the children's parents during the settling-in visits. On a daily basis children are encouraged to spend time outdoors and be physically active. Outdoor play opportunities include playing in water and climbing on large equipment.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are learning key skills in becoming fully independent and are keen and confident learners. The childminder effectively supports them in acquiring skills to prepare them as they move on to pre-school and school. The childminder tracks children's development and accurately identifies gaps in their learning.
