This provision is good

 Children make good progress. The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and develop. He plans for their individual needs and knows that children progress at different rates.  The childminder is calm and nurturing. He gives children confidence in their own abilities and motivates them to try to do things by themselves.  The childminder consistently reinforces positive behaviour through sensitive guidance and praise.  Parents comment very positively on how happy and settled their children are. They say their children enjoy quality learning experiences while in the childminder's care.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder is developing good links with the other settings which children attend, to provide continuity for their learning and care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not have a sharply focused and targeted programme of professional development in place to enhance his existing knowledge and experience.  Occasionally, children do not have sufficient time to think about how respond to questions from the childminder.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the plan for professional development so that it is sharply focused on developing the already good teaching to the highest level  enhance questioning skills to encourage children think and respond with their answers.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector viewed areas of the childminder's home used for childminding.  The inspector looked at policies, children's personal profiles and a range of other documentation, including evidence of qualifications and suitability of household members.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation and how the views of parents and children are included to drive improvement.  The inspector took into account the views of parents from their written comments.

p.2

The childminder continually reflects on and evaluates the service he provides. He ensures the views of parents and children are sought and listened to when deciding what areas he could further develop. The childminder shows a commitment to driving continual improvement. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has undertaken training in this area and has a clear understanding of the actions he would have to take if he had concerns about a child's safety or welfare. Communication with parents, both verbal and through a daily diary, is effective. The childminder also provides good information for parents through a termly progress update.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has developed a good knowledge and understanding about supporting young children's learning. He helps children to follow their own interests and confidently make decisions about their play. He is actively involved in children's play and makes learning fun. The childminder uses observations of the children and his assessments to plan play and learning experiences which match the unique needs of the children. He intervenes appropriately to challenge children and to extend their learning further. The childminder has developed effective systems for tracking children's progress. He demonstrates an awareness of the steps to take if a child is not making the expected progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The environment is safe and welcoming with a good variety of resources inside and outside. The childminder works closely with a co-childminder. Together they are consistent in their expectations of good behaviour and provide children with positive role models. The childminder gives children choice appropriate for their age, and their views are listened to and respected. Children are taught to listen to each other and to the adults. The childminder helps them to develop respect for each person's differences and uniqueness. Children have access to outdoor play each day. They regularly enjoy trips to explore their local community, including going to the park and attending various children's groups and activities. Children are helped to learn about keeping healthy; they are told why they need to use tissues and how to wash their hands before eating.
