This provision is good

 The childminder keeps up to date with new legislation and guidance. For example, she attends training and refreshes her knowledge in a variety of other ways, to improve her skills and promote good outcomes for children.  The childminder gathers information from parents when children first start. She uses this information well to promote children's personal routines and preferences. She helps children to settle quickly.  The childminder provides a wide range of resources and plans interesting activities based around the children's interests. Children are engaged and excited about their learning and their progress is good.  The childminder allows children to complete activities at their own pace. Children show good levels of concentration and enjoyment in their play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently encourage children to practise new words and phrases, to further extend their vocabulary and language skills.  The childminder does not always find the best ways to help children learn to take pride in their creations, to further strengthen their sense of achievement.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of all opportunities to enable children to repeat new words and phrases, to further develop their communication and language skills  take every opportunity to enable children to celebrate their achievements, to encourage them to develop even more confidence in their own abilities.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including the childminder's training certificates, insurance policy, records of attendance, risk assessments and the safeguarding policy.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder about her daily teaching and care practices.  The inspector jointly evaluated the effectiveness of an activity with the childminder, and observed the quality of care, teaching and children's learning.  The inspector looked at the areas of the home used for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder ensures effective policies and procedures are in place to promote children's well-being and safety. The childminder understands safeguarding and child protection issues. She is aware of the procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child. The childminder effectively helps children to achieve their full potential and she forms close relationships with children and their families, to promote consistency of care. She exchanges good information with parents which allows them to extend their children's learning at home. The childminder monitors children's progress well, to help move them on in their learning. The effective use of self-evaluation helps the childminder to identify how to make ongoing improvements to her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children as they play. She makes assessments about what they have achieved and what they need to do next, in order to progress well. Children enjoy a good variety of resources and activities in the childminder's home and at local parks and play groups. The childminder encourages the children to explore their environment. For example, children use their imaginations as they enjoy exploring the role-play area with kitchen resources, and a train and track. The childminder promotes the children's early reading skills well. For example, children enjoy listening to stories and looking at the images in the books.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a welcoming and nurturing environment. Children show they feel confident and emotionally secure in her care. They exchange smiles with her and enjoy familiar routines, which enhance their sense of security. The childminder acts as a positive role model and promotes the use of good manners. She makes good use of the local community to broaden children's learning experiences. For example, children enjoy regular exercise during outdoor play and they walk to and from school with the childminder to collect older children. Children develop a positive understanding of healthy lifestyles. They learn to follow good hygiene practices, and enjoy healthy snacks and home-cooked meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated to learn. They enjoy opportunities to practise their early writing skills and be creative, for example, as they concentrate and take time to paint different toy vehicles. They take part in different activities to develop their physical skills and also learn to feed themselves. Children learn to value and respect one another. They gain the skills they need in preparation for their next stages of learning.
