p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder sometimes only obtains parents' verbal consent instead of the required written permission before giving medicines to children. The childminder does not display her certificate of registration. Assessment methods are not effective enough to help the childminder identify children's current stages of development. This has an impact on how successful some activities are in supporting children's learning needs to help them make good progress in their learning. The childminder does not focus her professional development sufficiently on raising the quality of teaching and learning. Systems for self-evaluation are not rigorous enough to identify and address all weaknesses in practice and to maintain continuous improvements in the provision.
p.1
It has the following strengths
The childminder has regular discussions with parents about children's needs and gives clear guidance on some aspects of care. For example, she supports parents competently with regard to potty training. All children, including those who speak English as an additional language, are making steady progress in their communication and language development. The childminder provides a welcoming environment with a wide range of resources stored within children's reach. Children display security in the care of the childminder who interacts warmly with them at all times.

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed activities and evaluated these jointly with the childminder. The inspector looked at children's records and observation files, and a selection of policies. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children throughout the inspection. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualification and the suitability of all adults living in the home.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows how to recognise signs and symptoms of abuse. She understands how to make a referral if she is concerned about a child's welfare. The childminder keeps a written record of the medication administered to children, but does not always gain parents written consent prior to giving it. She does however, always seek consent verbally, therefore this minimises the impact on children's welfare. The childminder has appropriate policies in place and these are shared with parents so they are informed about the service she provides. However, the childminder was unable to provide her certificate of registration which must be displayed for parents to view. The childminder has completed her home-based childcare qualification. Nevertheless, she has not accessed other opportunities in order to continuously develop herself professionally. This means she is not developing her

knowledge and practice to create the best outcomes for children. The childminder has not effectively maintained an accurate overview of the quality of the provision, to ensure all of the requirements are consistently met.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement
Children enjoy their time with the childminder. For example, the childminder plans activities that the children show interest in, such as arts and crafts. She engages with children in their play, introducing some mathematical concepts and encouraging children's language and communication skills. Children's literacy skills are promoted. For instance, they enjoy looking at books and listening to stories with the childminder. The childminder captures some observations of the children as they play. She intuitively tracks children's development and this helps her to see they are making steady progress. However, she does not always look at how children's progress compares to what is typically expected for their age. This means the childminder cannot be sure she always has the highest expectations of children's achievements.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
There are weaknesses in leadership and management regarding record keeping. However, in most aspects children's health, safety and emotional well-being are adequately promoted. Children have developed strong bonds and attachments with the childminder. She is always close by to support their emotional development and to cuddle and reassure them when needed. The childminder is a good role model and encourages children to behave well, to be polite and to use good manners. She recognises children's achievements and gives appropriate praise to help build their self-esteem and confidence. Children enjoy time in the fresh air each day and the childminder encourages them to follow health and hygiene routines to promote a healthy lifestyle.
p.3
Outcomes for children require improvement
Children make steady, rather than good, progress in their learning. However, this is not assessed securely enough to ensure any gaps in their learning are quickly closed or sufficient challenge offered. Children are generally well prepared for their next stage in learning and are gaining some of the skills they will eventually need for school.
