p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not always obtain prior written consent from parents for every medicine she administers.  Information gathered from parents when children first start mainly focuses on children's care routines and interests. This does not provide the childminder with enough detailed information about what they already know and can do.  The childminder has not used highly focused professional development to help her to extend her skills and knowledge even further.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The qualified and experienced childminder demonstrates good teaching skills. She plans a variety of exciting activities and outings based on children's interests and stage of development. Children are eager, motivated and make good progress.  The childminder is warm, sensitive and uses a range of techniques to promote positive behaviour. Children are confident, self-assured and their behaviour is good.  The environment is stimulating and well organised. Children are able to independently access a range of good quality resources which helps to support all areas of learning.  Children have formed good bonds with the childminder. She communicates well with parents about young children's care routines. This helps her to effectively support children's emotional and physical well-being. She follows consistent routines which help children to feel secure, as they are aware of what to expect.  Children's healthy lifestyles are well promoted. They enjoy a range of healthy foods and

snacks and the childminder uses daily routines to support children's understanding of keeping healthy, such as washing their hands.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

 Obtain prior written consent for each and every medicine given to children. 01/04/2016

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen information gathered from parents when children first start about what children already know and can do, to help to plan even more precisely from the very beginning  implement a more focused programme for professional development, to help enhance existing knowledge and teaching skills even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector conducted a tour of the parts of the childminder's home used for childminding.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly evaluated this with the childminder.  The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as, a sample of policies, children's assessment records and evidence of the suitability of the adults living on the premises.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector took into account the views of parents gathered from written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Although the childminder evaluates her practice she has not maintained an accurate overview of the quality of the provision to ensure that all of the requirements are consistently met. The childminder does not always obtain prior written consent before administering medication. This does not have a significant impact on children's safety and welfare as the childminder obtains verbal consent and keeps a record of the medicines she has given to inform parents. The childminder does however, seek the views of parents in the evaluation process. Although the childminder attends mandatory training, such as first aid and safeguarding, she has not focused her professional development enough on enhancing her skills further in order to promote even better outcomes for children. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the signs and symptoms of child abuse and the procedure for reporting concerns about a

child in her care. The childminder completes detailed risk assessments of her home daily and before she takes children on outings. This helps to keep children safe.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of the childminder's teaching is good and she has a good understanding of how young children learn. She regularly observes children and assesses their progress to help her to plan for their next steps in development. The childminder shares regular information with parents about children's achievements and how to support their learning at home. She completes the progress check for children aged between two and three years and provides parents with a copy for their child's health visitor. The childminder engages children in pretend play. Children use their imagination as they play a game of teddy bears picnic. The childminder encourages children to count as they feed a bear with a spoon. This contributes to developing children's early mathematical skills. Children delight in song and rhyme sessions and make choices about the songs they want to sing. This helps children to develop their confidence and communication and language skills.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Although children are happy and settled, the weaknesses in leadership and management impact on children's safety and welfare. The childminder has developed good partnerships with parents. Parents comment that they are happy with their child's progress since starting. The childminder takes children to local groups, which helps them to develop their social skills. The outdoor environment is equipped with a range of toys which enables children to be physically active. Children explore a range of celebrations and activities about different cultures and the world around them, helping them to learn about similarities and differences.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and are working within the expected age bands for their age. Children are well prepared for their next stage in learning and are developing the skills they will need for their eventual move to school. They develop particularly good self- care skills and complete tasks well in relation to their age.
