This provision is good

 The childminder regularly monitors her provision. She seeks the views of parents to help identify how she can continue to improve her practice and the outcomes for children.  The childminder is fully aware of possible signs that indicate if a child's safety is at risk. She knows the correct procedures to follow if she has any concerns about a child's welfare.  The childminder understands how to support children's learning well. She provides interesting activities based on their choices. For example, children wanted to use the Easter cutters with the dough.  Children learn positive personal care skills, such as dressing, which helps them to become independent.  Children gain important skills, such as learning the alphabet, that help support them for their next stage of learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not make the best possible use of resources and activities to promote children's curiosity and imagination, particularly for those children who like to be outside.  The childminder does not obtain highly effective detail from all parents about children's learning at home.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve the range of resources that promote curiosity and imagination, particularly for those children who like to play and learn outside  extend the good partnerships with parents to further encourage them to share information about children's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's safeguarding knowledge and procedures.  The inspector observed children participating in activities and interacting with the childminder.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including policies, questionnaires and children's records.  The inspector discussed the children's learning with the childminder.  The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation process.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder's self-evaluation is effective as she consistently reviews and improves her practice. For example, she made her 'sensory bags' more accessible to children to choose independently. The childminder understands how to maintain a safe environment and teaches children how to keep themselves safe. For example, children practise how to evacuate the home safely in the event of an emergency. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps her knowledge up to date to improve her teaching, such as using online information and a network of childminders. For example, she recently looked at what makes food healthy.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder follows children's interests and provides suitably challenging activities. This consistently helps to motivate children to learn. She keeps parents well informed about their children's progress and, in general, this helps them to support learning at home. The childminder effectively monitors children's development from their starting points. She plans appropriate activities to help them make continued progress in all areas of learning. The childminder frequently listens and responds to young children as they ask questions; for example, she clearly explains where the bubbles they played with earlier came from.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are independent, for example, there are good opportunities for them to prepare their own snacks and meals. The childminder has consistent practices for managing behaviour. For instance, children are taught the house rules and they behave very well. Children develop strong relationships with the childminder and this helps them to feel settled and secure in her care. The childminder effectively uses resources that reflect children's varied backgrounds. This helps children to understand about different cultures. The childminder teaches children about the need for healthy lifestyles. For example, they learn that they wash their hands with soap to kill the germs. Children are happy and content. They develop good communication and social skills as, for instance, they regularly attend groups with the childminder and mix confidently with other children.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are positively emotionally prepared for the next stage in their learning. All children make typical progress for their age that helps prepare them for school. For example, young children learn early mathematics as they competently count everyday objects. They develop their appropriate physical skills well, such as enjoying action songs or posting balls through holes.
