This provision is good

 The childminder forms very effective partnerships with other professionals. She actively secures additional support for those children who need it to help them achieve. All children make good progress.  The childminder keeps parents well informed about children's progress. She actively involves parents in the learning process and uses their observations to help tailor the planning for individual children.  The childminder interacts skilfully with children and extends their learning successfully.  The childminder creates a homely and relaxed atmosphere. Children settle easily and are confident and secure.  The childminder works closely and cooperatively with the co-childminder and assistant. For example, they meet weekly to review and develop their practice and planning to help ensure they meet children's individual needs.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not consistently have access to a wide range of resources that provide them with greater opportunities to explore using many of their senses.  The childminder's effective monitoring of individual children's progress has not been fully extended, for example, to help identify and address gaps in progress of groups of children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance the monitoring and evaluation of the setting, for example, to look in more depth at progress of different groups of children  increase opportunities for children to explore different textures and materials using all of their senses.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed children's activities indoors and in the garden.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from a parent spoken to at the inspection and written feedback.  The inspector discussed childcare practice with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has good recruitment and induction procedures that help ensure her assistant is suitable to work with children. She makes sure her assistant fully understand their role and responsibilities, including for safeguarding children. All adults working in the setting have a strong understanding of what to do if they have a child protection concern. The childminder has a good awareness of how to identify and minimise hazards so children stay safe. The childminder supervises and monitors the professional development of her assistant successfully. Children benefit from the increasing knowledge and skills of all adults.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder carries out effective observational assessment of individual children. She plans challenging activities that build on children's increasing skills. The childminder gives plenty of focus to extending children's communication skills. For example, she skilfully questions children as they look at books together. Children become confident and clear speakers and they share their thoughts and ideas. The childminder reinforces children's early reading and writing skills well. For example, children learn to write their names and increase their awareness of letter sounds. The childminder gives carefully considered support to those children who are less confident speakers.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form strong emotional bonds with the childminder. They enjoy being with her. Children develop a good understanding of the need to respect and value others. They behave well and develop strong friendships. Children share resources with others. For example, they invite younger children to join in with opening the flaps in books. The childminder promotes children's good health successfully. Children enjoy plenty of exercise and fresh air. They develop strong physical skills and they enjoy outdoor play. Children develop a good understanding of the importance of personal hygiene and healthy eating.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the skills they need to prepare them well for school. They are independent and confident. Children learn to see to their own personal needs. They have a good understanding of how to keep themselves safe and manage risks. Children are interested and well-motivated in their play experiences. They enjoy learning and working things out for themselves. Children concentrate well and become absorbed in activities. They develop good social skills. Children happily play on their own as well as with others.
