This provision is good

 The childminder provides children with a stimulating environment where they are able to access resources independently.  The childminder regularly updates her safeguarding knowledge, is clear about her role in safeguarding children, and is aware of the action to take and who to contact should she have any concerns regarding their welfare.  The childminder gathers information from parents about their children when they begin to attend and she uses this information well, to meet children's care and learning needs.  The childminder provides children with daily opportunities to play in the fresh air and practise their physical skills, for example, as they practise moving the ride-on cars.  The children have formed strong bonds with the childminder, who helps them to settle well. Children make good progress and they are emotionally prepared for the move on to nursery or school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always incorporate mathematical language into all activities the children undertake, to support them to learn about shape and size.  The childminder does not always fully support children's early writing skills by providing a wide range of resources to encourage children to explore mark making in their daily play activities.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve opportunities for children to recognise mathematical concepts in everyday routines and activities  increase the opportunities for children to practise their early writing skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's daily routine and practices.  The inspector read a sample of documents written by the childminder, including the safeguarding policy and children's learning and development information.  Parents' feedback was sampled through questionnaires and letters.  The inspector discussed risk assessments with the childminder and inspected all areas of the premises used by children.  The inspector carried out a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder provides the children with a safe and secure environment and carries out comprehensive risk assessments to minimise hazards and protect children. The childminder has a positive attitude to maintaining her professional development and practice. For example, she has recently returned from maternity leave and has taken time to complete available training to ensure that she is up to date with current childcare practice. The childminder uses self-evaluation effectively to identify strengths in her practice and to target areas for development. She works closely with parents and other professionals to obtain their views on the service that she provides, in order to develop her practice further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder's quality of teaching is good. She enables children to expand their vocabulary. For example, she uses commentary and questions that challenge children to think and encourage them to speak. Children make good progress in their communication and language development. The childminder makes good use of spontaneous events to extend children's learning; for example, as they listen to the sounds in the garden and look for the birds and aeroplanes. The childminder has a sound awareness of how children learn, and effective systems are in place for observation, assessment and planning. Children benefit from regular outings in the local community to broaden their experiences. For instance, children go to the beach and parks to learn about the world around them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides the children with a welcoming environment where they freely explore, knowing that a familiar adult is close by. Children have fun and engage in activities well. They develop independence and self-care skills and they learn good personal hygiene routines, such as washing their hands before eating. The childminder provides children with nutritious meals and teaches them about how to have a healthy diet. Children are kind to their friends and their behaviour is appropriate for their age. The childminder teaches children about how to keep safe, for example, by reminding them to hold on to the handrail when using the stairs.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and they are well prepared for the next stage in their lives and eventual move to school. Children attempt things for themselves and learn the skills needed for their future.
