This provision is good
Partnerships with parents are good. Parents are kept up to date with the progress their children are making. The childminder completes a daily diary which provides a good two-way flow of information between the childminder and home. The childminder provides good support for children who speak English as an additional language. She supports their communication skills by repeating words and phrases clearly. The childminder learns some simple words in children's home languages to extend their vocabulary and promote understanding. Children's emotional security is given high priority by the childminder. Children demonstrate that they feel safe and secure, and relationships between the childminder and children are strong. Children show their pleasure to see the childminder as they greet her with a big smile on leaving school. The childminder has a good understanding of how to manage and minimise risks to

children. Her home is secure and she is fully aware of her responsibility to supervise children. The childminder manages her provision well. She has a range of policies and procedures to help parents understand how children learn, develop and keep safe in her care.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder has not yet explored professional training opportunities to further develop her practice. The childminder does not yet obtain full information about what children can already do, in order to effectively build on their prior knowledge from the beginning.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

develop opportunities for continuous professional development that expand understanding of current best practice and drive improvements gather even more information about what children already know and can do when they join the setting.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector viewed all areas used by the children. The inspector observed activities as children played indoors. The inspector discussed with the childminder how she complements children's learning in school. The inspector looked at relevant documentation, such as the childminder's self- evaluation and evidence of the suitability of the childminder and members of her household. The inspector took account of the views of parents expressed in written testimonials.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder supervises the children well. She has a good knowledge of the indicators of abuse and understands the procedures to follow should she have any concerns about a child's welfare. Necessary suitability checks for all adults living on the premises have been completed. Close, friendly relationships are formed with all parents. They are invited into the childminder's home for meetings to discuss their children's progress. Parents are complimentary about the childminder. They say she is very helpful and their children like to spend time with her and her family. The childminder regularly liaises with school teachers and continuity for children is promoted well. Overall, the childminder uses self-evaluation effectively to identify what works well and areas that may need improvement. She encourages parents and children to contribute to this process through discussions.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The range of resources and activities available to children enables them to develop the skills they are acquiring in school. For example, as children colour pictures, they write who the picture is for. They form recognisable letters, building on their growing writing skills. The childminder plans stimulating activities that provide opportunities for children to develop their creativity and imagination. She answers children's questions and provides good opportunities for them to think of, and execute, their own ideas. She provides a large amount of media and materials which prompts children to consider how they can make a robot. Children come up with ideas about how to create arms and legs and enjoy the whole experience of producing a model. Children who speak English as an additional language speak clearly and confidently as they chat happily with the childminder and visitors.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are comfortable and at ease in this friendly and relaxed family atmosphere. They are happy in their surroundings and show pleasure in their play and interactions with the childminder and the rest of her family. Children develop an awareness of dangers and how to keep themselves safe. They learn about road safety and the rules for holding the childminder's hand to cross the road. The childminder acts as a positive role model and children are polite and show regard for her. Children successfully manage their own hygiene and personal needs. They follow simple routines, such as taking their shoes and coats off, and washing their hands before eating. The childminder provides children with a good variety of healthy fruit snacks. This helps to support a balanced diet and promote a healthy lifestyle. Children often visit the local park for physical exercise.
