children and young people since the most recent full inspection

This home was judged good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection Ofsted judges that it has sustained effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The staff team provides young people in this home with a nurturing and safe environment. As a small team in a single occupancy home, they provide highly personalised care. Staff members work together effectively as a team to help the young people to really benefit from their placement and move on in a planned way. The registered manager is suitably qualified and experienced. She provides strong leadership and as a result, the staff team feels supported and valued. Engagement with other professionals is good and helps to ensure the holistic and complex needs of the young people are fully understood and met.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Since the full inspection there has been a change in occupancy. The previous young person had made good progress and his move from the home was planned by the placing authority as part of his transition to greater independence. Both the previous and current young person have the same social worker. The social worker advised that he has confidence in the staff team and how they help young people to achieve. He feels the young people’s success is attributed to the quality of the relationships between the staff and young people.

Behaviour is managed effectively. Physical restraints have not been used for more than eight years. Staff members communicate openly with young people so that they are clear about what is expected of them. Staff also listen to what the young people say and where necessary, advocate for them. Staff will negotiate and compromise with young people. This approach helps the young people to feel valued, to respect staff and invest in the placement. For example, when young people are out with friends, they keep in touch with staff, letting them know how they are. Staff members encourage young people to invite their friends over for meals and to watch a dvd, or play computer games. Young people confirm that they feel listened to and that staff members act in their best interests. They understand why staff have to follow certain procedures, for example, if they do not return home within agreed timescales.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Staff members work hard to help and protect the young people. They have an excellent understanding of risks for individual young people and are effective in helping them to become increasingly safe. The young people’s social worker recognises this good work and young people confirm that they feel safe living here. Young people know how to complain or raise concerns about their safety and have access to written information and guidance.

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The experienced and qualified staff team provide the young people with stability. The registered manager is responsible for this home and another small children’s home located nearby. Although each home operates separately, the staff teams provide mutual support. Young people benefit from excellent continuity of staff. They get to know the young person really well and as a result, provide very individualised care. They give good attention to supporting young people to make progress in their health, education, emotional, social and psychological well-being. For example, staff members ensure that young people have suitable education in place. If difficulties arise they work effectively with partner agencies. Staff members are clear with young people about their expectation to attend school and that they will support them to do well.

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The registered manager has effective quality monitoring processes in place. As a result, the staff team learns lessons from challenging events and continues to make improvements to benefit the young people. One recommendation was made at the full inspection about how information for young people was displayed in the home. Young people continue to have access to important information. This information is no longer displayed in a way that detracts from the very domestic and homely feel of the home.

What the inspection judgements mean

At the interim inspection we make a judgement on whether the home has improved in effectiveness, sustained effectiveness, or declined in effectiveness since the previous full inspection. This is in line with the Inspection of children's homes: framework for inspection.

p.5

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
