Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and the children playing and interacting together.  The inspector spoke to the childminder at convenient times during the inspection.  The inspector spoke to parents and considered their written feedback.  The inspector looked at the childminder's website and a sample of documents including children's progress records and evidence of suitability.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has been proactive in developing her setting since her registration. For example, she has purchased new toys and equipment to ensure that all learning areas are promoted and has developed her own website. The childminder shows a commitment to developing her knowledge and has attended much training. For example, she attended a workshop to support her with assessing children's progress and undertakes research independently. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has updated her knowledge on safeguarding and understands her responsibility to protect children. She knows the process to follow if she has concerns about the welfare of children and families.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn and knows how to join in with them to extend their play. For example, she shows children how the magnets work and introduces new vocabulary such as 'metal' as they explore together. The childminder provides many good opportunities during play for children to develop their language. For example, she asks questions when looking at books and allows children time to think and respond. The childminder uses her local area effectively to promote children's development. For example, they visit local groups to socialise with other children and visit the library. The childminder promotes children's physical development effectively. For instance, they visit local parks and playgrounds to use large equipment and use puzzles and threading toys indoors.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a welcoming environment for children and uses daily routines to extend their learning. For example, they count with the childminder as they climb the stairs and whilst preparing the area for snacks. The childminder is a good role model and helps children to develop a positive self-esteem. For example, she offers children regular praise during activities and negotiates with children how they can share the coloured discs fairly. Children gain an understanding about healthy lifestyles. For example, the childminder provides well-balanced meals and gives children daily access to fresh air and exercise. Children extend their understanding further as they practice daily routines such as hand washing before meals.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy and engage well in activities, showing good concentration. They develop communication and literacy skills effectively. For example, they practise early writing on the easel and learn new words as they look at books with the childminder. Children learn to manage their own hygiene and dressing, and are well prepared for the next stage in their learning.
