This provision is good

 The childminder promotes positive behaviour and children of all age groups interact well and take turns. She teaches children good social skills and she is a positive role model.  The childminder plans a good range of activities which engage children and capture their interests. All children can access resources and make free choices in play.  The childminder demonstrates a good knowledge and understanding of how to keep children safe and the procedures to follow should she have concerns about the welfare of a child in her care.  The childminder ensures that she understands her roles and responsibilities, and stays up to date with changes in guidance and legislation. She monitors her practice well to make sure she is safeguarding children and their overall learning and development is supported.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is not always fully successful in sharing information with school staff to contribute to and complement children's overall learning and development.  The childminder misses some opportunities to promote children's independence and physical skills because at snack times she does things for them that they could do themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen methods to share information with the school that children attend, to promote continuity of care and learning for individual children  improve the snack routines to build on children's physical and independence skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 Discussions took place with the childminder at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed activities and the childminder's interactions with children.  The inspector looked at documentation, including a sample of children's records, and checked documents to confirm the suitability of the childminder and the other adult household members.  The inspector took account of the views of children and parents spoken to on the day of the inspection. The inspector took notice of written accounts from parents.  The inspector discussed the childminder's self-evaluation with her.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of her roles and responsibilities. Arrangements for keeping children safe are good. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good overview and knowledge of the way children learn and develop and offers activities and experiences that complement what they are learning about at school. The childminder dedicates time to ensure she stays up to date with what children are doing at school. For example, she speaks with school staff, takes note of school displays and reads the school website. This is helping her make the most of the range of information available to her. Self-evaluation works well. The childminder identifies her key strengths and areas to work on. Partnerships with parents are good. They are pleased with the service the childminder offers and they comment that their children enjoy attending and have fun.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder prepares resources and activities in advance so that her home is welcoming and ready for children's arrival. Children are always engaged and busy doing activities that interest them. The childminder engages in rich conversations helping to develop children's language skills. Her involvement in activities is attentive and respectful. She knows children's individual strengths and offers challenge and extension for them in these areas. The childminder also knows when to give children time to play alone so that they can develop their independence and lead their own play and learning. There is a good balance between adult-led and child-initiated play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and secure, and have respectful relationships with the childminder and their friends. They follow the house rules, which they know well. Children learn effective ways to manage their feelings. The childminder is a good role model, and helps children to develop key skills needed for their future learning. The walk back and forth from school is an opportunity that the childminder makes the most of to teach children to take responsibility for their personal safety. This helps support them to develop a good awareness of safety for their future lives. For example, they know how to cross roads safely and to stay close to the childminder to minimise the risk of getting lost. The childminder has a secure emergency evacuation procedure. She teaches this to children well through practical drills and regular discussion about what to do to keep safe in the event of a fire.
