This provision is good

 The childminder supports children effectively to gain good early communication and language skills. For example, she describes textures and sounds, uses repetitive language and provides commentary to children's activities.  Children feel safe and secure. The childminder uses her training well to support children's emotional well-being. They form close attachments with her.  The childminder knows children well. She uses her ongoing assessments and knowledge of children's interests well to plan a stimulating range of experiences. She effectively monitors children's good progress from their starting points.  The childminder develops strong partnerships with parents, professionals and schools to promote a consistent approach to children's care, learning and development.  The childminder evaluates her provision well and develops clear action plans for improvement. She has a positive attitude to training to improve children's learning

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder occasionally provides young children with too many choices during activities, which sometimes overwhelms them and reduces the learning opportunities.  Children develop independent skills well, for example, to use knives at snack time. However, the childminder does not always support their skills to use tools more effectively and safely.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to make decisions about their play and the resources they use  strengthen children's understanding and skills to use tools more effectively and safely.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children as they played inside and outside.  The inspector spoke with the childminder at convenient times during the inspection about her knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage requirements.  The inspector sampled documentation, including children's assessment records, the childminder's self-evaluation, and her policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues and the procedure to follow should she have a concern about children's welfare. The childminder regularly updates her knowledge and ideas to support children's learning effectively, such as researching and sharing good practice with other childminders and professionals. The childminder involves parents well in their children's learning from the start. She provides ideas for learning at home and works in partnership, using her training effectively, to promote consistent behaviour management strategies.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are motivated to learn. The childminder provides a wealth of experiences across all areas of children's learning. For example, she provides a variety of resources, such as cardboard tubing, for children to investigate. Children confidently add favourite resources, such as vehicles, and roll them inside the tubing, experimenting and investigating well. The childminder interacts skilfully, helping children count and work out which vehicles will fit inside, supporting their mathematical development effectively. The childminder uses the garden and local parks well to support children's physical development. Children thoroughly enjoy digging in the soil and playing with the variety of balls in the garden.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a safe and secure learning environment where children feel confident to explore and investigate independently. Children become increasingly more aware of their own needs, such as requesting drinks and asking for more fruit at snack time. The childminder provides children with clear explanations to help them understand, for example, that they need to wait their turn while she helps younger children wipe their hands after painting. She consistently praises children for listening and their cooperation. The childminder is a good role model and encourages children's understanding of healthy and safe practices effectively, overall.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points and gain the skills needed for their future learning and eventual move to school. They have valuable opportunities to develop their physical skills, for example, when using knives to slice vegetables for printing activities. They follow instructions well and have good opportunities to develop their early writing skills during their creative activities. Children develop good communication and language skills and express their needs clearly.
