p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Since the last inspection there have been three changes to the young people living in the home. Two young people have moved out to live with family members and one young person has moved to a different home within the organisation. As a result of these discharges, there have been three new admissions to the home.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people continue to receive a good level of individualised care. There have been notable improvements in outcomes for young people, relating to their health, safety, education attendance and attainment. This is a result of a consistent, experienced and focused staff team. One parent reported ‘I was really worried for my son I thought there was no hope, but since he has gone there they have given me hope, they have worked wonders with him’.

Young people are registered with doctors, dentists and opticians. They attend their routine health appointments with support and encouragement from staff. Staff are well supported to understand and implement the home’s model of therapeutic care. There are regular monthly reflective sessions that support staff in developing strategies that improve the emotional well-being of young people. Young people's medication is stored and administered safely by trained and competent staff.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

There are appropriate systems in place to ensure the safety of the young people. Staff are trained in safeguarding and they are fully aware of the procedures to follow. The missing person procedures and risk assessments guide staff on the actions to follow if a young person was absent without authorisation from the home. Restraint in this home is low despite some very challenging behaviour, this demonstrates the home’s commitment to try and support young people to manage their own behaviour’s to good effect. Staff maintain thorough records of any incidents that have occurred and they are discussed and reflected upon at staff meetings.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people have good attendance at school, mostly at the home's own on-site school. This represents enormous progress because many young people were not accessing education at all prior to coming to the setting. One social worker reported ‘I am very impressed with the impact that the home have had on this young person, he has successfully re-engaged in education’.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people are supported by the staff team in maintaining contact with their families. One social worker reported, ‘I am impressed with their commitment to contact for the young person. They supervise telephone calls which is part of his care plan and they also facilitate contact with Mum by picking her up and taking her back. Contact with siblings are also facilitated’.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The accommodation provided for young people is physically safe and appropriately secure. Health and safety matters are managed effectively, to promote the safety and well-being of young people. The system for the recruitment and selection of staff is thorough and ensures young people are only looked after by staff that are appropriately checked in order to work in the home.

p.3

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home continues to be managed by a suitably qualified manager who has been in post since January 2009. Staff receive regular training to ensure they have the skills and competencies necessary to meet the diverse needs of the young people they look after and there are systems in place to ensure training is regularly updated or refreshed. Staff also receive formal supervision and appraisal.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
