This provision is good

 The childminder is effective in her observation, assessment and planning procedures. She identifies clear starting points and monitors children's development well. Children enjoy learning and make good progress towards their next steps.  The childminder has a good understanding of the purpose of play. She interacts well with children and is attentive to their needs. Children play happily and show interest as they investigate their surroundings.  Through effective self-evaluation the childminder makes ongoing improvements to her practice. She reflects on the success of activities and ensures that planning has a clear focus, relevant to each child.  The childminder provides a welcoming and stimulating environment for children. She is enthusiastic in her approach and enjoys her work. Children have fun with the childminder and feel very much at home in her care.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder communicates well with parents, she is not always successful at involving them in children's activities, to further support their children's learning.  The childminder provides books for children, although she does not extend the resources and opportunities to fully engage children's interest in them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop more opportunities to involve parents in children's activities and learning, to extend support to children and strengthen partnerships with parents  increase the range of opportunities to help engage younger children's interest in books, to further encourage their developing concentration skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children in their indoor and outdoor activities.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector read the childminder's self-evaluation form and feedback from parents.  The inspector viewed a sample of children's development records.  The inspector checked required documentation and safety of the premises.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has completed relevant child protection training to refresh her secure knowledge of the procedures that safeguard children's welfare. The childminder checks that the learning environment is safe and suitable for children, to minimise risks. Recent developments include the provision of a garden room, increasing the play space for children and extending their outdoor learning. The childminder researches ideas for activities and successfully puts them into practice. For example, she has increased the range of sensory play opportunities for children. The childminder uses local authority guidance well to monitor her compliance with the requirements effectively.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses children's interests well to extend their learning. Toddlers watch closely as she demonstrates how something works. For example, having been provided with stones to use with their diggers, the children were keen to have a go; they placed their stone into position and pulled a lever to make it fall. The childminder adds interest to activities with additional materials. For instance, the toy farm is equipped with hay for animal bedding. Toddlers copy animal names and sounds as they play, which promotes their language development. When the childminder follows the children's lead, they show delight as she joins in their imaginative play.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has a good awareness of children's dietary requirements. She gently encourages children to try different foods, helping them to experience different tastes and textures. Toddlers enjoy sociable mealtimes and laugh as they rub their tummies and say a popular rhyme. The childminder teaches children to share and to be kind. From an early age children learn good manners, such as to sign and say 'thank you'. Young children watch and listen to the childminder as she gently encourages them to learn. The childminder promotes children's social and emotional development well, so they are ready for the next stage of their learning. She maintains a daily diary, and has regular discussions with parents to inform them of their child's personal routines and activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are happy and well cared for, showing contentment and increasing levels of confidence. They are inquisitive and like to explore, which supports future learning. The children learn well, for example, they are able to recognise and point to their facial features and body parts. They can make confident choices, for example, clearly indicating when they want to play outside, which is a favourite activity. Young children show self- esteem, and readily smile with pleasure, such as when the childminder praises them for 'good sharing'.
