This provision is good

 Children are active and inquisitive learners. They engage in a wide range of interesting and exciting learning experiences that are consistently based on their interests. For example, children grow in confidence as they explore the texture of cooked and raw foods with their hands. They use their vivid imaginations to make up stories as they choose to add toy dinosaurs and characters.  The childminder takes children to a wide range of organised groups and outings in the community, such as a dinosaur museum and local farms. They occasionally travel to these using public transport, helping them to develop a good understanding of the world and be physically active. This also extends their personal, social and emotional skills as they meet and play with other children.  Children are very happy and settled with the friendly childminder and members of her family. The childminder creates a fun and nurturing environment for them. Children

express their affection for her as they snuggle up to her when they become tired and settle down to sleep quickly, as she soothes them using a gentle voice.  The experienced childminder has a very good knowledge of how children learn and develop. She attends regular training and reads professional publications. This has recently helped her to introduce innovative methods that specifically extend children's communication and language even further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not yet fully explored further ways to encourage parents to share information about their children's ongoing learning and development at home.  While the childminder liaises with some settings which children also attend, she has not yet extended this to cover all the provisions involved.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 explore further ways to encourage parents to share information about their children's learning and development at home, building on the partnership approach to children's achievement  strengthen methods to effectively share information about children's learning and development with other settings they attend.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during indoor and outdoor activities, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times.  The inspector observed a planned activity and jointly discussed this with the childminder.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records, a selection of policies, safety procedures and required documentation.  The inspector looked at evidence of the suitability of the childminder and adults who live at the premises over 16 years of age.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents.  The inspector reviewed how the childminder evaluates her setting to continually improve outcomes for children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. For example, the childminder shares her strict code of conduct in relation to the use of mobile phones with visitors to her home. The childminder knows how to swiftly meet children's needs in the event of a child protection concern. She is reflective and continuously evaluates her practice to improve learning outcomes for all children. The childminder ensures that children benefit from a high-quality learning environment. Parents are full of praise for the service that the childminder provides, and they particularly appreciate the energy and commitment she dedicates to her role.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is strong. The childminder places a high priority to promoting children's communication and language development. Children respond well to the way she adjusts her speech in relation to their level of understanding. The childminder models effective listening skills and expands children's vocabulary, introducing new words that relate to their play. This helps them to develop good listening skills and clear speech. Her consistent praise motivates children to complete challenging activities, such as complex puzzles. Children demonstrate a strong sense of perseverance. They experiment, through trial and error, on how to connect pieces of train track together to create a bridge. The childminder makes good use of daily routines to introduce children to mathematical problems. Children use number names and learn simple addition. The childminder promotes children's literacy skills well. They thoroughly enjoy listening to her read their

chosen books. They make good attempts at beginning to recognise and write letters in their name. The childminder's skilful use of spontaneous events extends children's understanding of different occupations. For example, children thoroughly enjoy observing workers operating construction vehicles outside the childminder's home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is a very good role model. She calmly and consistently reinforces good manners, supporting children to take turns with toys. Children enjoy nutritious, freshly prepared meals, which the childminder provides. They grow a selection of fruit and vegetables in the childminder's garden which helps them to understand where food comes from and that it is good to eat. Children confidently help to prepare their own snacks. Close supervision from the childminder helps children learn how to keep themselves safe when using knives. Children have daily access to the childminder's inviting garden in all weathers. Regular visits to local parks enable children to run freely and use large equipment, helping to develop their physical skills. Children have immense fun jumping in puddles and shriek with delight as they play a game of chase.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They develop the key skills they need in readiness for school, such as being independent. The childminder's thorough assessments of children's achievements help her to swiftly identify and address any weaknesses in their learning.
