p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder has not attended training in safeguarding and lacks knowledge of the types of abuse. She has not kept up to date with changes to ensure she is able to protect children fully.  The childminder has failed to notify Ofsted of significant changes with regard to a member of her household.  The childminder does not ensure reasonable steps are taken to minimise potential hazards. Toiletries are stored within children's reach and household equipment is not promptly removed from the stairs.  The childminder does not plan effectively to ensure all children receive support adapted to their individual needs. Children do not make good progress in their learning.  The childminder does not review her practice rigorously enough. She does not identify changes that can be made to ensure all children achieve the highest levels of learning.  When children attend more that one setting, the childminder does not maintain a two-

way flow of information about children's learning with the other provider. As a result, she cannot make sure that there is continuity in children's learning and that they are consistently supported to make good progress.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children learn about healthy lifestyles. They eat balanced meals daily and have many opportunities to play outside in the fresh air. Children are happy in the care of the childminder and make strong relationships with her and others.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 evaluate practice more effectively and identify clearly where improvements are needed and how these improvements will be made.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at those parts of the childminder's home used for the care of children.  The inspector observed teaching and learning activities in the indoor environment.  The inspector looked at a sample of procedures and children's records.  The inspector reviewed the childminder's self-evaluation form and read written feedback from parents.  The inspector spoke with the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

The arrangements for safeguarding are ineffective. The childminder lacks knowledge of the types of abuse and is not informed about recent changes in safeguarding practice. She is not able to protect children fully and keep them safe from harm. All adults living on the premises have had full suitability checks completed by Ofsted. However, the childminder has not shared information with Ofsted about significant changes in their roles, in line with requirements. She has not met the actions from the last inspection effectively. For instance, the childminder does not use her knowledge to plan effectively to ensure children make consistently good progress in their learning. As yet, the childminder has not shared information with other providers to ensure children receive the best support for their learning. Self-evaluation does not take account of significant weaknesses to ensure areas for improvement are accurately identified and addressed promptly. The childminder

maintains good communication with parents. There is a regular two-way flow of information so that parents receive feedback about children's routines, learning and daily experiences.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The quality of teaching is inconsistent. The childminder is aware of children's preferences and mostly follows their lead. However, she does not ensure there is a good balance of child-led play and adult-led activities. The childminder makes assessments of children's achievements and identifies gaps in their learning. However, she does not plan consistently to provide focused support for each child's learning in order to meet their individual needs fully. The childminder provides appropriate levels of challenge for children to name shapes and colours, and count. Children choose favourite nursery rhymes and enjoy listening while she sings. They point to pictures and recognise a wide range of animals, which they name correctly. The childminder gives praise often and this encourages children to keep on trying.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Children's welfare is inadequately promoted due to poor safeguarding knowledge and practice. The childminder has carried out risk assessments of the premises. However, these are not rigorous enough because some toiletries are within the reach of children who use the bathroom unsupervised. Household equipment left on the stairs poses a potential hazard to children. The childminder promotes some aspects of children's care appropriately. She gives lots of hugs when they are unwell or unsettled. Children cuddle against her and demonstrate by their responses that they feel emotionally secure. Children develop independence skills through all activities. They select resources for play and feed themselves at lunchtime. The childminder follows the daily routine agreed with parents and ensures children have opportunities to sleep or rest.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are not making consistently good progress in their learning. However, they do develop some skills in early literacy and numeracy. Children enjoy playing with programmable toys and maintain short levels of concentration as they attempt to solve problems. Children learn to mix with others and develop appropriate social skills. Overall, they are suitably prepared for the next stage in learning at nursery or school.
